Daily 5: Improvement required

In this Daily 5, we take a look at some of the top areas the Gamecocks (1-0, 1-0) need to do better in order to have a successful season.

    • Spot on article. Bonzai(the method of lining up, check the defense, call a play) has hurt us way more than helped us. Too many delay of game and jumping offsides penalties. Why not have a good scouting report, call a play according to defensive tendencies, and let the QB check off if we don't get what we want. This keeps us up tempo.
We are not suited for a vertical passing game this year. With great backs and TE's, and a QB that can run, why can't we run more play action, bootlegs, and sprint outs. This also opens up the tunnel and bubble screens to smaller WR's and gets them in space. If we pound them enough, the middle of the field will open up.I guarantee you BE could come in and run this extremely well, if Shaw goes down.
Happy feet becomes eyes at ground level and not down field. Shaw can throw on the run. This also takes pressure off the OL.
Defense played great. One fundamental mistake. Play the man, not the ball, unless you are sure of the int. or break up.
Special teams? Really? They are 30% of the plays in a FB game. Looks like we spend about 5% of practice time on them. Great special teams will win you 1 or 2 a year. Bad special teams will lose you 2 or 3 a year.
We have great coaches and players. I have confidence they will figure it out.

    • I think that, and I may be totally off base, Spurrier is purposefully running out almost all of the time clock due to the fact that he would audible, and the defense would audible. I think maybe he is trying to take the time away for the defense to make adjustments to his adjustments. It does not cater to the impatient, that is for sure.

      Good points on all!

    • "The offense doesn’t need to move like Tony Stewart, but it needs to move a little bit faster than Robby Gordon."

      Great line Whittle.

Interesting take on SOS's playcalling. You may just be right.

    • It just always amazes me at how many faircatches we have on punt returns. Be it poor blocking or great punting I don't know but I would love to see a return every now and then. Maybe we need pull an Urban and give the special team guys special privileges and make it end vogue or something. I still like the idea of running a little hurry up O. Script out a hand full of plays and let Connor make the adjustment or either start holding pictures of Kirk Herbstreit and the aflac duck. LOL. Feel pretty good about Saturday.

    • Our special teams have not been special in long time. Other teams make it look easy. I hope we will get there soon. It's another important component that great teams always seem to have.
