Late on Tuesday night, South Carolina received a verbal commitment. The good news kept rolling on Wednesday, when the Gamecocks struck with another pledge.
Milledgeville (Ga.) Georgia Military Academy linebacker Brandon Golson is the newest South Carolina commitment.
TheBigSpur.com caught up with Golson's high school coach, Walt Wilson of Saint Matthews (S.C.) Calhoun County about the Gamecocks' newest pledge.
"Brandon technically committed to South Carolina late last night," said Wilson. "What a long and interesting journey it has been.
"I can tell you and everyone else this, the kid has always wanted to be a Gamecock."
After signing with South Carolina in the 2010 class, Golson failed to qualify and headed to Fork Union. He then signed with Louisville, where he was ultimately ruled as a non-qualifier once more.
Not wanting to fail to realize his dream of playing on college football's biggest stage, Golson enrolled at Georgia Military Academy.
"He's good to go," said Wilson. "Brandon will finish up in November and he will enroll at South Carolina in January. He'll then have two years of eligibility."
Wilson discovered Golson at Calhoun County's field day the spring before the talented linebacker's junior year.
"That's a funny story. I saw the kid and man, could he run. I asked him to come out to play football for me and to run track. He ran a 10.7 100-meters for me in high school. He can fly.
"So, I go him out on the football field and he was so raw but he was athletic. He played in six games his junior year before he was hit by a drunk driver and missed the rest of the year. In those six games, he had 16 sacks. His senior season, he had close to 30 sacks and returned 3 kick-offs and a punt for a touchdown.
"He's one of the best to ever come out of Calhoun County and that's saying something."
The journey to the SEC started with South Carolina and it has come full circle.
"Brandon is a stronger person today, much stronger. Most kids would have given up. I'm not sure if Gamecock fans know what they're getting with Brandon. He's a 6-foot-2, 240-pound linebacker that can run a 4.5.
"And most importantly, he wants to be a Gamecock more than anything."
According to Wilson, Golson selected South Carolina over offers from Kansas, Kansas State, Arizona, Arizona State, and several other programs.
