    • We also won ugly in game one in 1984. Nobody thought we would win many after we eked out a victory in that game over The Citadel. But we went on to click off 8 straight to go 9-0, a record that still stands for consecutive victories. Connor has now won 5 in a row going back to last year when he led us to victories over Florida, Citadel, Clemson and Nebraska to end the season. To tie the record, he must lead us to wins against ECU next week, then UAB, Missouri and Kentucky. To set the record of 10 straight victories our leader would have to then defeat---The University of Georgia in Williams-Brice Stadium on October 6!

      Great article, Mr. Whittle.

Great point. I had forgotten about the consecutive win streak. I was at the Citadel game and believe it took a HB pass or something from Quinton Lewis to win. Very ugly but that led to a special season. Hoping this is the start to another special one as well.

    • Conner has guts but am I the only one that thinks he missed wrs yesterday. On many plays Bruce and Ace were wide open and Conner couldn't give them the ball.

Also having the play called in with 10 seconds on the play clock was freaking killing me last night.

Rough game all around. Defense took some bad angles. A lot of arm tackles that were broken.

But we won and it was the first game. 1-0

    • I thought it was a rough game for the majority of the offense, but Connor stepped up when the offense needed him the most and fought through pain. I'm proud of the young man. 5 years ago we would have lost that game. I'll take it, as I'm sure the coaches will figure out what needs to be fixed and I have confidence in them that they will make the adjustments.

He often did not have time in the pocket to look down field to see open WRs, since the OL did not protect him well for much of the night.

    • Connor under threw two balls that were going to be big plays. Both should have been thrown a little further in front, but it looked like that was due to Connor not getting it off on time. The int and the broken up TD pass to Ellington were completions had the ball come out a split second earlier. IMO, that won't be an issue next time Connor chunks it downfield, as I'm going to chalk that up to first game/first drive jitters. We did not utilize the tight end routes that we all know we've got up our sleeves. We actually did once on the drive we had to have to win, and despite having the rubber arm, Connor put it where it needed to be. I'd like to see Moore step up...I think we are going to need him to. I'd like to see more of Roland. Regardless, this was game one against a fired up and much improved Vandy squad and we pulled it out in the face of adversity with a noodle armed, wincing in pain warrior of a leader at qb. Marcus could have shouldered even more of the load, and he's just going to get more confident and comfortable. I like what I saw from our young DBs, and you can bet that after watching film and practicing this week, that long TD won't happen again if that same play sets up that way again. Youthful mistake there, and the young man will learn from it and lay the wood the next time he's in that situation. I've got my garnet glasses on, but the fact is simple and as true and reliable as the rising and setting of the sun: we NEVER look good in an opener against a quality opponent. With the exception of So Miss, can you ever recall an opener where you came away pleasantly surprised? I happen to think that last nights win may have been one of the best opening wins for us in a long, long time. We had our backs against the wall with an injured QB an NO Momentum. Our guys nutted up, sucked up the pain, pushed back the nerves, and refused to lose that game. I guarantee you at this will get their attention, sharpen their focus, strengthen their resolve, and light a fire under their asses. Will definitely light a fire under the coaches asses to work on at least one back up plan in case a different qb is needed. Time will tell, but I'm not worried. It was a good win.
