Green goes with Gamecocks

South Carolina has its first defensive back on board for the 2014 class. And the Gamecocks had to come from behind to land him.

Four-star CB Wesley Green is the Gamecocks' first defensive back commitment in the class.

Four-star cornerback Wesley Green (Lithonia, Ga./Martin Luther King Jr.) committed to South Carolina Friday over offers from Clemson, Tennessee, Georgia, Florida, Ole Miss, North Carolina, Miami and Auburn among many others.

"I didn't want to wait till The Opening because I wanted Wesley Deshaun Green to be the first DB committed to South Carolina," Green said.

"I've been building a relationship with the coaches since February," Green added. "My father and I really felt like South Carolina was DB University. My Dad really liked South Carolina and the academic resources they have. It's important to us that I graduate."

The 5-foot-11, 170-pound prospect commits to the Gamecocks fresh off a visit to the South Carolina campus last weekend.

Green was recruited to the Gamecocks by defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward, but he also has a strong relationship with secondary coach Grady Brown.

"My Dad really liked South Carolina and the academic resources they have. It's important to us that I graduate," Green said. "I have such a good relationship with Coach Ward and Coach Brown. My Dad and felt like South Carolina was the best fit for me. I feel like I can really help the secondary and play a lot of different positions."

The Gamecocks again got an assist from 2014 linebacker commitment Bryson Allen-Williams (Ellenwood, Ga./Cedar Grove) who worked Green hard as well.

Clemson initially held the lead for Green, but following a visit to Tennessee he put the Vols on top. After that visit wore off, Green actually named a top two of South Carolina and Clemson before he had ever visited Columbia. Green finally made it to the South Carolina campus after having to cancel a couple of trips and ultimately committed to the Gamecocks.

"This feels great! I can focus on my game now," Green said. "It's a huge weight off my shoulders!"

Green is ranked the No. 27 cornerback in the country and No. 31 prospect in Georgia by 247Sports with a rating of 90. In the industry-generated 247Composite, Green is considered the No. 18 cornerback, No. 179 overall prospect and No. 15 prospect in Georgia with a rating of .9234.
