Gamecocks chasing JUCO guard

Frank Martin

Gamecock head coach Frank Martin is personally recruiting Frazier

Frank Martin is looking to bring in players to add toughness and size to his ball club in 2014. Junior College guard Chad Frazier fits that bill and holds a Gamecock offer.

    • With offered from Illinios, Bama, and Gonzaga...lets lock this kid up. We need a bigger point guard really bad.

    • Losing Lashay really hurt. He wasn't going to make the difference in making the post-season or not, but if he played well, we could've easily won a couple of the close losses so far.

I am not sure I would call him a PG...He is more of a combo guy, has a little handle but is more of a volume scorer...I have not seen him since he has been in JUCO, however in HS he was good...He improved each season to make himself into a good mid major type...I am not sure he would be a starter on an NCAA high major team, and I would not call him a PG either...Certain he would not beat out Ty Johnson...

I still think Cook fits this team and Martin's scheme better...Different skill set, different player, but I hope we go after him...

This is kind of off topic, but what do you think are realistic expectations for Ty next season? I've never seen him play.

What Johnson will bring is, not only ability to the PG position, but stability. He has size, quickness, and an attacking mentality a combination we have not seen in Columbia. And we get him for 3 years. He will have been with the team for a year so he will have a familiarity with what we are doing, he will be given the keys from day one, and he is only playing basketball...He has the ability to face up his man and get by him, off the dribble, into the lane...

It will be interesting to see him Bruce, Carrera, Thornwell, and Richardson next year. We wont be outmatced, in the back court in many games we play. Realistically he will score double digits shooting btw 40 and 45 percent from the field and get about 4 assts...But these numbers is not what he will bring, he will bring consistancy...

    • Jamie, your information on the potential basketball recruits is always interesting. Please keep it coming, it really helps to have the first hand knowledge from you and WG.

Are you involved with AAU programs in Raleigh, or do you run a scouting service ? Just wondering how you see so many of there players in action.

While you are at it, could you compare Sindarius Thornwell, Ahmed Hill, and LJ Peak as college prospects ? Many thanks.

My thinking is that Frank wants to bring in Frazier to play the point in the early season until Johnson is ready, then use him in the combo guard role after that.

Well the three are very different players...

Ahmed Hill is a scorer, he is very athletic and has a high knowledge of the game and the floor. He is a good, yet streaky spot up shooter but has an elite level mid range game. He can get to the basket and dunk on you or pull up and hit a mid range j...His size and athleticism could lead to him being a very good defender. He is a big time player...

Peak is a slasher, ultra athletic, can get off the floor, but goes through ups and down when scoring. He can shoot, but is streaky, would do well to develop a mid range pull up or a pump fake one/two dribble shot. I would also suggest that he has the ability to be the best defender of the three. He is still putting it all together. His only knock is his propensity to drift in and out of games. Also, I would say he is more of a 3, while the other two are 2s...Good prospect who has the skills and natural ability to be a big time prospect (this is a big summer coming up for him, I could really see him taking a big step forward coming back from Whitney Young).
**FWIW, I really appreciate his leaving to play on a team with national level talent and against a national schedule. Excited to see him come back as the big fish in the small pond to see how much his game really expanded when he is the man...

Thornwell is a unique player, he can score easily but I would not call him a scorer, he can handle and pass extremely well but I would not call him a PG. He is an extremely efficient player. He is the type of player who you run an offense through. Athletic, a good shooter, great kinesthetic awareness, and a high bball IQ...Upon seeing him the first thing that popped out at me is how long his arms are...A big time leader and player that people will love playing with...

The three players could very well play along side one another and not cancel each other out, but actually compliment each other's abilities...

The great thing about each of these players is that their games are still evolving. Each player is adding a new dimension to their game and getting better each year.

As for the first question...My love of basketball coupled with my location and my brother get me to a lot of events...Working recruiting would be a fantastic job, and an opportunity I would enjoy...

    • Jamie, many thanks for taking the time to offer your detailed thoughts on each player. Great insights and descriptions. I can envision Thornwell in a Gamecock uniform next year, making us a better team with the attributes you described. We certainly need some inside post players soon. The talented power forwards are killing us.

I love Carrera, but he needs a 6-9, 250 stud alongside him. He just can't match up with players like O'Bryant, Jarmell Stokes, and Booker. But he could be a key contributor on a Big Dance team with some other true inside players.

Your thoughts on the % chances of Hill and Peak signing with Carolina ?

      collegejoe

    • Can Chad be here by lunch time Friday afternoon, lol.

      SCD

    • While Carrera will sppend some spot time at the 4, his future is as a hustle 3...Great, unique player...

D Henry would be a huge coupe...should camp out KVille style at histhe school

Anytime you goin up against the biggest name schools for an outI of statethe prospect you have a tough road. We have an in and a story to tell Hill and we have people in place (Stroman" Carrera, Thornwell" etc...) who could draw him...Until he narrows down you cant put a big percentage on it...He is thinking about us, but there is a long way to go.

With regards to Peak I think we have a good chance. Some things, seemingly need to get smoothed over, but I think they could. I will say with LJ that if he comes to USC I think he will become a very good player, if he goes elsewhere I dont think he will pan out...
