    • Beal was throwing something that looked like a slider and it was clocking 86 mph on the stadium gun . Is he throwing his slider that hard now ?

    • Seddon is definite need of cleaning up the space between his ears as he has all the physical tools for sure.

The radio guys said he has two speeds he throws his slider. I think the "fast slider" is a cutter and not a slider.

    • Thanks for the box score, bro.

Really like Saiko's lines. No walks by pitching. Nice.

    • I am impressed with how Vergason has picked himself up off the deck in the last couple of games. It looks like he can make the plays when he doesn't waste time thinking about it. The double tap in the glove has cost him a couple of throwing errors already but when he just takes the ball and cuts it loose, it's impressive. Keep in mind that Dantzler was unexpectedly awesome at 3rd base last season - statistically the best defensive season for any third baseman in Carolina history.

It's definitely weird. I don't think he's ever admitted what it is. He finally admitted last year that he has two breaking pitches. I'm with you in that I think it's a cut fastball. It's nasty, whatever it is.

When he's on, his slider looks like Smoltzie's, and that is huge praise. When's he's not on, he bounces it in the left hand batter's box.

I am amazed at how many kids make bad throws when they have plenty of time and good throws when they have to get rid of the ball quick. It's a good habit to get into to just let it go as soon as they get it. Seems backwards to not take your time, but I have seen it over and over. When a kid gets rid of it quickly he makes a good throw and when he pats it and takes a step or two, he throws it away. This is a general comment and not a comment about Vergason in particular.

      Agreed about Vergy.

Dantzler is just a very good college defensive player. Doesn't have the best arm, or range, or athleticism, but is poised and clutch, and never nervous. He's a winner, and I'm so glad he turned down money from other SEC schools to come here. He can swing the bat a little bit too. He reminds me of Trey Dyson, and that is a compliment.

For those of us less astute, what's the difference between a cutter and a slider insofar as the way it's thrown?

A cutter is thrown like a fastball but gripped like a curve ball. The object is to make it break a little bit but the speed is like a fastball (see Mariano Rivera). The slider is thrown like a curve ball except not over the top. Very difficult on the arm but much more break than a cutter. Normally 10 MPH or so below the fastball speed.
