Lovick suspended indefinitely

South Carolina

South Carolina shortstop Tanner Lovick was arrested on Saturday night and has been suspended from the baseball team.

Lovick was arrested on Saturday night in Five Points for but an arrest report has not yet been made available. South Carolina head coach Ray Tanner has suspended Lovick indefinitely.

Freshman Joey Pankake won the shortstop job over Lovick during the fall, but the junior college transfer was the backup at the position. Other backups at the position are T.J. Costen and Connor Bright.

Lovick is a scholarship player and will automatically count to the final roster whether he is kept on the team due to his arrest or not.

It was once a crowded middle infield but, the numbers are starting to thin. Scholarship middle infielder Mikal Hill transferred in search of a better opportunity to play, as did walk-on Jake Watson. Junior college infielder Casey Smit didn’t make it to fall practice before he was arrested on DUI charges and was no longer invited to walk on.

Coming out of the fall, junior college transfer Chase Vergason is the projected starter at second base. Costen and Bright will back up that position as well. Junior college transfer LB Dantzler is the projected starter at third base.
