Pharoh Cooper committed to South Carolina on Thursday.

"I sat down with my mom and dad today and we made the decision to go ahead and commit because South Carolina is where I felt comfortable," Cooper said. "I called (USC defensive line coach and area recruiter) Brad Lawing and he asked if I was ready to jump in the boat and I told him yes sir. (Lawing) was excited."

Cooper is commitment No. 12 for South Carolina in the 2012 class. Lawing will be at the school Wednesday to scout him. He picked the Gamecocks over N.C. State and East Carolina.

"I picked South Carolina because they play in the SEC and they run a 4-2-5 defense," he said. "They are recruiting me as a defensive back and in that scheme, you get more defensive backs on the field. I also fell in love with that place when I visited."

Cooper has an overall rating of 83 (three-star), is the nation's No. 116 wide receiver prospect and the No. 34 overall prospect in the state of North Carolina according to 247Sports. South Carolina is recruiting him as a cornerback/safety.

Cooper joins Lithonia (Ga.) defensive end David Johnson and Orlando (Fla.) Jones defensive end Devin Washington in committing Thursday.
