South Carolina athletics director Ray Tanner filled a vacant position on his senior staff by hiring Charles Bloom away from the SEC office. Bloom, a South Carolina graduate, is the new Director of External Affairs for the athletics department.
TheBigSpur.com learned late Tuesday evening that Bloom accepted the position earlier in the day and will become the fourth member of Tanner’s senior staff joining chief operations officer Kevin O’Connell, deputy athletics director Charles Waddell, and senior women’s administrator Judy Van Horn.
“Charles brings a vast amount of experience working on both the university level and at the SEC office,” Tanner said in a statement. “He brings tremendous expertise in communications, having worked closely with Commissioners Roy Kramer and Mike Slive, both visionaries in collegiate athletics."
As Director of External Affairs at South Carolina, Bloom will oversee things such as media relations, marketing, IMG College, video production, the ticket office, the athletic department website, and social media.
“I am excited about the opportunity to return to my alma mater in this capacity,” Bloom said. “Carolina is a special place and I look forward to working with Ray Tanner and the USC staff to promote and enhance the Gamecock brand. I am fortunate to have worked the last 17 years with a great staff at the Southeastern Conference and I am very appreciative of Commissioners Roy Kramer and Mike Slive for their support and leadership during my time in the SEC office.”
Bloom’s strengths have always been in social media and marketing, which is something that Tanner believes is of great importance in this growing age of digital communication.
“I believe that it’s only going to grow and grow and grow,” Tanner told TheBigSpur.com in a September interview. “I think it will be valuable if we made a hire that has that kind of expertise to keep our brand as strong as it can be and keep us on the forefront.”
Bloom has been at the SEC office since 1995 and served most recently as the associate commissioner of media and public relations. His primary responsibilities included serving as the primary media contact for football and director of the football and men’s basketball conference tournament. Bloom also assisted in the development of the Bowl Championship Series helping with the creation of its standings formula and media policies.
Bloom graduated from South Carolina in 1985 and is a past president of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Bloom and his wife, Cindy, have two children - Lindsey and Max.
