McEvoy leaving Carolina

Redshirt freshman Tanner McEvoy is transferring from South Carolina, head coach Steve Spurrier announced on Tuesday evening. McEvoy was not at practice on Tuesday.

"The Gamecock coaching staff and I wish Tanner all the best, as he continues his collegiate career elsewhere," Spurrier said.

McEvoy, a 6-6, 209-pound redshirt freshman quarterback from Hillsdale, N.J. was listed on the fourth-team entering the fall. McEvoy was battling Andrew Clifford and Seth Strickland for the third-string quarterback job behind Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson.

McEvoy was arrested on July 29 for driving after consuming and was suspended from team activities until fall camp opened last Friday. He participated in the first four practices but was not at Tuesday's fifth practice of the fall.

McEvoy will have the opportunity to transfer down a level and play immediately or he could transfer to a Division I institution and play as early as next season.
