COLLEGE PARK, Ga. - On Friday, Terry Googer (College Park, Ga./Woodward Academy) announced what he had known for over a month – that he is committed to South Carolina. In front of friends, family and Woodward Academy faculty members, the 6-foot-4, 205-pound athlete publicly declared his intentions to play for the Gamecocks, the first school to offer Googer.
“When I made my last visit to South Carolina in early July, I knew it was the place for me and I pulled the trigger and committed,” Googer said. “I liked the system already, but when they showed me the academic side of the program, I knew then that I loved everything about South Carolina. It feels great to be committed to South Carolina and a relief to be done with the process.”
While Googer lined up sometimes at receiver last year, he was primarily used at quarterback, a role he will continue to be utilized in for his senior season. Googer is excited about his future as a big target for Gamecock quarterbacks, projecting himself to possibly catch passes at 230 pounds down the road.
“I am a big receiver, so they said they will use me often and early in goalline situations and sometimes in the slot,” Googer said. “I love that because I feel like I can go up over defenders and come down with the ball.”
South Carolina already has two other commitments from the Peach State for the 2014 class and three for 2015, continuing the trend of stocking the roster with talent from Georgia. When comparing programs, Googer saw that level of familiarity as a huge plus for the Gamecocks.
“I think it is really important to be able to come in already feeling comfortable with the other guys in your class” Googer said. “I feel the guys we have committed now and hope to will be able to adjust quickly to college life and contribute early."
The recruiting process allowed Googer to grow close to another Gamecocks’ commitment, one he hopes to settle the score with on the gridiron this fall.
“Bryson Allen-Williams and I are really good friends and we talk every week,” Googer said. “I am looking forward to our last battle against each other to break this tie we have right now.”
Steve Spurrier and his staff informed Googer that they hope two 247Composite Top 247 targets from Georgia join him on their commitment list - one that 247Sports projects to announce his decision soon, and one that might visit Columbia, S.C. in the near future.
“They told me they want me to help them get Andrew Williams and Dante Sawyer,” Googer said. “We have a small, but very talented commitment class that should be able to help the team win next year. I think we are in great shape to win the SEC Championship the next two years.”
Googer, rated an 88 by 247Sports, gives South Carolina 13 commitments for the 2013 class.
