This is a good reason why I pay little attention to recruiting early in the cycle, as I clearly don't have a grasp as to the thinking that goes on. I can't imagine spending the time on a 3 star recruit that made up his mind early and is classified as a player that will be "very difficult" to turn.
I'm sure I would not be good at that game. I would tell him good luck with the smurfs and spend that time on higher rated recruits that had a genuine interest in SC.

Here are some three stars that have played at USC in the recent past: Sidney Rice, Eric Norwood, Fred Bennet, Dunta Robinson, Jonathon Joseph, Devin Taylor, DJ Swearinger, Antonio Allen, Connor Shaw.
Here are some examples of some lowly two stars that have floundered at USC: Ko Simpson, Captain Munnerlyn, the Lindsays, Patrick DiMarco.
The stars are just things to brag about before they step on the field. Jason Barnes was a four star, Mark Barnes was a four star, Chris Culliver was a five star, and probably equal or lesser than those two and three stars listed. The coaches do not look at the star rating, unless they get asked about it.

Yes, I think we all know those stories, and there are many.
FWIW, my main point revolved around ... the time and energy spent on a recruit characterized as "very difficult to turn". That would be a real challenge for me if I was in that business. I would quickly move on to greener pastures and try to maximize the tremendous amount of time and energy that goes into recruiting. I tend to look at it strictly from a business time value point of view, and as we all know, college football is a BIG business.

It's not really wasting that much time. It's being efficient. We offered TE Josh McNeal who is his team mate I believe. It doesn't take much time to watch his film, decide if you like him, then offer. They both will be visiting together on March 31st. When Robinson goes to their school he can visit both at the same time.
