Ward pleased with defensive effort

Lorenzo Ward

Steve Spurrier seemed to feel like the offensive performance was so-so but defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward, overall, seemed happy with his group’s play.

    • Ugh, don't like hearing about playing more zone. Zone seemed to be where we got killed last season. I think we played much better d when we had press man coverage. Am I crazy for thinking that?

Not crazy, IMO. To me, over the last several years it seems that opposing WR's find huge holes in our zone defenses. They don't get behind people usually so there is very little YAC, but I remember feeling frustrated when an opposing team like UGa could just dink & dunk down the field against our zone.

It has its purposes, I know. And we have to be able to mix things up. It is often better against the run and it takes opponents' offenses time to mount drives against more zone defenses. So it is necessary. But I have a negative feeling about it nonetheless.

    • It is going to be a great defensive year with 3 great pass rushers after adding Darius English.

It didn't sound to me like Whammy wants to do more zone than last year. He said we did about 50/50 zone/man last year, and he wanted to continue to be balanced.

Sounded like the interviewer was the only one talking about doing more zone than last year.

No, you are not crazy. Those zone schemes drove me crazy.

It seemed like against arky we played zone most of the game. I don't know if it was because Demario was in there and is a little big to run with receivers, or what, but it did not work.

    • I don't think they'll run zone exclusively. You can't run man all the time, you have to mix things up as a DC.
