Weekly Thoughts: Talkin' bowl games

Happy Ball Coach

If South Carolina isn’t picked for the Sugar Bowl, there will be disappointment amongst the fan base. How will people respond to where the Gamecocks will spend bowl season?

William Gunter
    • I don't think we'll get the Sugar. What about Cap 1 ?

    • You basically posted the same thing about the bowl situation I did in my rant on the PPG board but did it a little more eloquently. Nice write up.

    • I think our fans would travel the best to Jacksonville for the Gator. I think the coaches would like that destination because of the number of recruits in that area. I will not be disappointed with a Gator berth.

    • I don't believe we're the 7th best SEC team. We barely lost to LSU at the same place that Alabama barely won. We did however lay that egg against Florida, but if you play that game over again, we would get a completely different outcome. Plus we beat the hang-dang out of UGA. I don't see why we don't get Cap. One at worst. I don't care about the destination. I just want us to get the respect that I think we deserve. Now I guess we need to roll all over Clemson and Arkansas and maybe we will. Who knows.

    • Has anyone ever been to the stadium in Jville?...nice or a dump?

    • You could also say we got blown out in the same place Missouri barely lost. The reality is that the bowls won't pick based on who is the "better team". The reason it isn't the Cap One at worst is:

1.) Fla will likely be there at 10-2 or and they beat the $hit out of us. (If they go 11-1 BCS bound)
2.) LSU could be available at 10-2 and they beat us.
3.) UGA could be available at 10-2 and coming in as the East Champions.

One thing we do know is that 2 of the three will likely happen. With us just going there last year, the other 3 all have very strong cases should they be sitting there.

In all likelihood we are going to be finishing 3rd place in the East, even if we finish top 6 or whatever in the BCS.

    • I think the Gator would be great for fans, the team, recruiting, etc. However, getting passed over by two likely 9-3 teams as well as all the other two loss teams in the conference is a show of disrespect. Simply put, we could lose to Ark and Clem and would still get the Gator Bowl.

Similar thing happened to LSU several year back. They were like 5 or 6 in the nation and went to the Peach. Ironic that if we beat Clemson, they could cost us the Peach. That would be the reason ATL passes on us, not because of a lack of respect. Could you blame the Cotton Bowl for selecting aTm to play in Dallas? That would work out as a much better match-up for them for many blatantly obvious reasons.

All of the likely 10-2 teams have legitimate stories to sell in getting a bid over us.

Nobody is disrespecting us. It is unfortunate for us that a number of scenarios are working against us in between the BCS and the Gator. It just is what it is. We haven't helped ourselves by acting like we could give a $hit about the Outback either.

    • I think the Cotton bowl could be a very real possibility if we run the table and TAMU gets destroyed by Bama.
TAMU doesn't bring as much outside revenue as a visiting Gamecock fan base that I think would travel Very well, If we run the table and beat a top 10 Clemson.

I could see the Outback and Cotton doing a swap, as long as its not Texas.
Then they definitely take TAMU, as you just can't resist that matchup.

    • This is why the Champions bowl was created. There's just not enough "marque" bowls for SEC teams. We'd fit right in with that bowl if it existed this year.

    • I can't get to New Orleans for a Wed game - Jax would be perfect! But please, not against Northwestern - Michigan St would be great.

    • I attended the 2008 Outback Bowl and consider it quite the anomoly compared to the Liberty, CFA and Cap One Bowls that i attended. As the other poster stated, it was an 11 am start time, with a team that ended the season on a very sour note, with poor leadership and some turmoil within the team due to quitters, a QB controversy, and coaching staff changes. It was another game where we started off poorly and could not rally from that in the game, unlike today's new Carolina. We were over-rated and Iowa was under-rated. There was NO buzz or energy to that game.

The other bowls were quite energetic and different, even the CFA Bowl where we had costly TOs and tried to rally back.

I plan, right now, to attend the Sugar, Cotton and probably Gator Bowls if we get invited even though some of those are long shots. Not sure about Cap One Bowl which I thoroughly enjoyed in many ways, and doubtful on Outback. I already have CFA Bowl tickets since I live in ATL and can usually get more tickets to the CFA Bowl.

I think our attitude usually reflects that USC has generally not been given the respect that we often earn; however, this year has been different as was last year. I think this year represents just a unique set of circumstances with respect to the bowl slots with so many quality teams and the fact that some just fit well in certain bowls like aTm in the Cotton and someone else (FL, LSU or GA) in the Cap One (and even Clemsux in the CFA, likely blocking that slot for USC). I am hoping that we can get to the Sugar Bowl!!!!

    • If we do not get the Sugar Bowl I Hope we get the Gator Bowl. I would like to add another (different) trophy to the case.

    • if the Carrier Classic is only going to invite yankees then I think they should hold it in New York Harbor. And don't give me that not yankees but Mid westerner crap.

    • Not saying it was a bad write-up, WG, but I don't feel that the question you posed was really addressed. You asked how the fanbase would react to the Gator, and then answered how you'd feel/how you think the fanbase should feel. In any case, I think the Gator would be a major disappointment, and I wouldn't blame any fan for not being excited about playing there. That said, if the opponent is indeed Northwestern, as an NU season ticket holder, I can safely say that the Gamecocks could show up and sleepwalk to a 14-17 point win over the 'Cats. If Carolina came to play, it would be a disaster for the boys from Evanston. NU just doesn't have the athletes on defense to slow down a team with any speed/quickness at the WR position. Simply put, Ace, Byrd, and Bruce would go off for possibly a record setting day, as long as Connor could get them the ball. So it wouldn't be all bad, I guess.

Very nice stadium, been a few yaers ago, but it will put the Florida Citrus Bowl that we were in last year to shame. Enjoyed Capital One Bowl but stadium is in need of serious updating.
