Catching Catfish by Hand

  • Has anyone on the board done that - It looks exciting but I have a tremendous fear of being under clean water - can't imagine trying to catch a catfish in the murky and muddy water which you can't see your hand an inch away from your face. Not to mention having a huge fish clamped down on your arm.

  • No thanks on that.

  • the danger would not be so much from a fish chomping on you. nor from snakes or gators, though that is not impossible, but turtles, snapping turtles specifically, will take some fingers from you if you shove them into their habitat. a life time of hand fishing would probably leave you a couple of digits short of ten

  • I have never done it, but I have friends that do. They used to use just their hands to catch them, now they use what looks like a piece of pvc pipe with a sponge at the end of it. The sponge has a treble hook in it. They just run the pole in the water and let the catfish bite the sponge and then pull them up.

  • Love to watch it on TV...no way I'd blindly stick my hand in a hole under the water with the wildlife we have in SC. The fish itself wouldn't scare me - its what else may be in that hole that I can't see.

it probably helps to have a suitcase of pbr before you try too. it tends to blur the line

Easy. Find a Shoal. Get a group. Feel around a rock for pockets. Have friends plug up all holes except yours. Reach under rock and if a catfish is under there pull him out by putting your hand in his mouth(mouth like sandpaper) or with two fingers around spines. Grab from front to keep from being stuck by spines.
Don't worry about snakes . Can't breathe under water. Caution! If you feel scales, remover your hand quickly. Bream will fin you .

  • While I have absolutely no interest in putting my hands in a hole underwater to find out what is in there, I know someone who used to. My mom was born in Louisiana and although the oldest, she was the runt of the litter( 5'1") of 10 siblings. According to my mother, her younger brothers used to think it was funny to use mom as a human lure, and hold her by the legs and shove her into the hole in the side of the bank, fists first, with her arms stuck out in front of her.She swears that there were catfish caught in the 80 lb range this way and I have 2 uncles that confirmed their shenanigans. This was on the banks of the Mississippi River just on the edge of Baton Rouge near where the bridge for I-10 goes to Lafayette. She also said the most scared she ever was in her life was coming nose to nose with a snapping turtle of about the same size while underwater there.
