Cover songs that are better than the original ?

  • I much prefer Lynard Skynard's 'call me the breeze' than JJ Cale's. (no disrespect to Cale)

  • Was Hendrix's 'All Along The Watchtower' a cover of a Dylan version? If so, then that!

JJ Cale is a bad ass and had some pretty damn good music that other bands covered. This was a guy who was a influence on the guitar to Clapton and Knopfler.

I don't know if I would say better than the original because all the songs are awesome but with different feels to them.

    Travelin' Light - Widespread
    Ride Me High - Widespread
    Cocaine - Clapton
    After Midnight - Clapton

Troubador is one of my all time favorite albums.

Definately not saying Mr. Cale isn't a badass, because he is. Troubador is indeed a terrific album.

  • A little different history on this one but I will throw it into the mix. "You've Got A Friend" written and sung by Carole King but made famous by James Taylor. My preference is Carole King's version...she's my all time favorite...Tapestry is my favorite album...there I said it!

  • I'm a big fan of the "Bad Company" cover by Five Finger Death Punch. And yes i'm younger and of a different generation.

Charm City Devil's "Man of Constant Sorrow" cover is badass too, but I can't say its better than the original. The cover is much harder and new age, while the original makes me think of grown men getting turned into Toooadds. Priceless.

I go back and forth on the Charm City devils cover. The guy I ride with listends to Octane on sirius, and they play it quite a bit. Once I really liked it. other times, I wished he'd turn the channel.

  • Which version of Red Red Wine do you prefer - Neli Diamond's or the cover done by Rob Marley or the one by UB40?

I think the original is the best.

  • I was unaware that was a Neil Diamond song.

I rock out to Octane all the time. I like the high energy rock. Not much for jam bands.

I don't mind the high energy...

its the helpless/I give up/ whiney/feel bad for me lyrics that I can't stand. ie...'monster you made me' or linkin park's whole repitiore.

and jam bands are what they are... its certainly not for everyone.

I was going to say that Cale's songs are great, but many performed them better than he did.

I love Tears for Fears, but Gary Jules' remake of "Mad World" is outstanding. Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" is a great classic rock song, but I like the Foo Fighter's cover of it better. Cake has some great covers, like "I Will Survive" and "Sad Songs and Waltzes". Metallica's version of "Turn the Page" is very good, even without the alto sax that makes the original. Johhny Cash's cover of "Hurt" is great. Doesn't displace the original, but Jamie Cullum does a great lounge-y cover of Radiohead's "High and Dry". For punk fans, The Ramones covered many surf-era songs, and an honroable mention the Circle Jerks' "Golden Shower of Hits" medley of 70s cheese. For bluegrass covers, hard to beat The Gourd's "Gin and Juice" cover, and it's also worth checking out Gene Wooten's dobro version of "Day Tripper".

Finally, check this funky "cover" of Strauss...go Cocks.

I kind of agree with that about JJ. It really depends on what kind of mood I'm in for which version I listen to. If i want something laid back and chill, I'll listen to JJ. If I wanna rock like Twisted Sister, i'll listen to the covers.
