Internet rumors' corrosive effect

  • Even though I can't stand Nikki Haley, this column is dead on. In sports, we see on this messageboard and others how easy it is to spread malicious rumors out of nothing.

Whispering campaigns can take flight in new media - The Washington Post

Rumors wreak havoc in the online age.

  • LOL, and that is being nice

  • Was going to say that that sucked for Haley, then I saw the pic of her in that orange vest. No sympathy from me.

  • sorry but in your effort to elicit sympathy for the poor lady caught by a false internet rumor, you have the picture in clemson orange

i dont feel any sympathy for her. she is either with mitt romney or on the view selling her book. she is a celebrity. i am glad the dc elites feel sorry for her. i hope she is working in the capital somewhere soon real soon

her orange vest her orange kids and husband make me want to whisper in her ear "you make me want to puke"

I've heard from a good source that YOU started the internet rumor about our esteemed Governor.

And I'm sorry about your reading disability.

I said in my post that I can't stand her. She's one of my least favorite people in the world. But that particular rumor about her was false.
The column was about the ease and speed with which lies spread on the Internet. That the lie was about Nikki Haley doesn't change the fact that it was a lie.

I'm proud to say I'm a solid Republican who voted for Sheheen and will gladly vote for anyone who runs against her. She is a joke and our state should be embarrassed that she is our leader.

She is scum like Clinton, Newt, the Kennedy's, Pelocy, Reid, Sanford and John Edwards. I can't stand any of the slimeballs.
    BTW, ABC, your politics sucks!

  • Writer is right on target. Internet is full of trashers nd extremsits of all stripes. For proof , look at some of the idiocy spewed by extremists in this thread by EXTREMISTS. much of the extremism is from socialist left wing and angry team players and on the other side hee are those who have no common sense in realizing that the original Cosntitution has and will be changed by Congress over time ( may not care for some of it but it simply has and we need to live with it. Some dont seem to understand that social extremism crwds the edges of bot sides...not just one. The problem is that while many want to beat their American chest...they dont act very American in want ing the best for all at the end of the day.

I voted for Nikki and am a Yellow Dog Republican...have been since 1962 my first voting year. I think the best person in the race won our governorship fair and square. Continually however we get over-the -top trash from the left and a few bitter-enders on the right. From what I can see she is a pretty good governor and no,.... I dont care for her current grandstanding.....it is a part of her job; however and has (the promotion and grandstanding) done good thngs for us rather than bad. I think she is probably more honest than most politicians but probably not squeaky clean...no-one is (want me to go over YOUR tax records).

Yall really ought to carry this kind of stuff to another board and please thry to act as a sensible adult. Oh, under the circumstance I probably would have worn a Garnet jacket but Governors dont have to throw away ther fanmanship when they Sit behind the Palmetto trees. I DO appreciate one of our former Democratic governors (Hodges) who was a Gamecock but seldom if ever wore the colors...he as generally in a suit (respectful of his former governorship) in recent years)

Abour 90 years ago the artists, actors, professors and students rose up agains the Royalty and the people in a chili country in Europe...ther victory led to the untimely deats of tens of millions of their on countrymen as well a tens of millions in other countries...awful political acts. WE have that same group in one movemnet in this country as well...and that isnt opinion it is REAL HISTORY if thathat is still taught by our current educators
So let's not get to chirpy about the talents of our first female, first minority governor

  • Hopefully Nikki Haley is one and done as Gov.

She has no real talents and she only won by being propped up by the Republican money and a ridiculous groundswell of support by tea party folks who love idiots like Sarah Palin. I give her credit for being the first minority governor just like I give Obama credit for being the first minority president, but quite frankly, I think both of them are bad people and I am ashamed that they are the leaders of my state and country.

  • Those who tear down the Tea Party (I'm not active in that) just dont look at the facts. 90% of their protest...civil and respectful American protest I might add. are to do with the ridiculous spending, particularly over the past 3 years, of WASHINGTON...all of Washington. While true the Bush Admin ran up 8-9 triilion of debt figting three wars in response to the terrorist threat and acts of 9-11. I will always believe that Iraq was dirty...I believed at the time that we were gonn afeint at Iraq and invade Irn which I would have been happier with. Agfgan was fine with the bombing campaign and a Terrorist Chase Force (we did not have to committ ground troops there..BUT THAT AINT WHAT HAPPENED. We tried ot maintain an operation in afgan which obama doubled on. WE fought a War at home on peaceful Airline passengers and Phone Privacy. Copst for 7 years about7 Trillion...add a grossly generous Rx program and you have 9 Trill.
Three years of ridiculous payoffs to Unions and Greenies and you get 5 Trill more. This is the Tea Party problem.2/3 of our National Debt WASTED and we waste even more evry day on failed programs ad Waiting to Fail new giveaway programs

BTW geniuses Sarah didnt saay that Russia thing....the GAL on SNL read the line written for her to trrash Sarah.

I thought it was a great line.....kinda like the RR quote "We start Bombing in an Hour" or something like that

  • The more rumors the better. That orange and how she acts about it causes me to dislike her even more. I didn't vote for her but I did not vote. The next election I will vote for Democrat holding my nose the whole dang time.

  • From the article the most telling point and one that should give us pause was:

"Her popularity as governor ebbs and flows as these things go, but her appeal as a national figure does not seem affected by local attacks. She’s going to be around for a long time."
    ----------

Also a contributing factor to her election was the falsehoods spread by will folks alleging his "inappropriate relations" with her. People just don't like lies even those disguised as rumors.

I have no problem with the tea party and the ideals they stand for. I only have a problem with they choose to support people who are just dumb. I know most politicians aren't in the top percentile of the IQ charts, that's why they hire smart people to make decisions for them, but it's clear that Haley is a prop who is simply the mouthpiece for the behind the scenes money in South Carolina. As long as she keep trying to destroy public education and glorify private education and charter schools, I'll continue to do everything I can to prevent her from winning another election.

  • No offense to you if you or your wife is a teacher...at the classroom level we have amy fine teachers who are qualified and do an excellent job for the state but the ED System has become one of the biggest political machines in the country and there's probably more money WASTED there than spent well. I know that times have changed but though we try...for at least half the population...readin, writin, rithmetics aare no longer successfully taught. The idiots you speak of control the national and state eduational systems and blow money on a bunch of crap that haas nothing to do with an education.

When ya get beyond the first 12 grades...the money really has become crazy. Much of our national (not international debt) is there. Idiocy abounds at the College Grad level as well....THAT is ALL about money. All our governors have faced that problem and Haley just another trying a range of band-aids (just like the rest).

Sarah has a colleg degree and thank goodness it isnt from an Ivy League institution or some of the other respected university that spends half their time on junk education

sorry john, but the national figure going to be around for a long time thing, i would hold fire on that.

first, she has been an abomination as governor to date. as a republican she only won over the dem by a few measly points, as down a vote for a gopper in this state as you are ever going to see. since then she has alienated everybody with a pulse and brain activity.

nationally she is the minority exception to the rule, sort of like bobby jindal in la. a minority republican, a woman to boot

however, she aint that smart, go ahead put her on meet the press, please. i can only pray. cause there is no cattle and no hat either for that cowgirl

did you know cows have a bill of rights in india?

if there are any more specious or nonspecious salacious rumors about this twit of a governess, please post away

she is a tater. she luvs her some dabo so ya'll go on cozy up to that skank

I'm not a Zais fan but he is correct that the SDE was a mess and he's making wholesale changes. We'll see what works and what doesn't work. Higher ed is certainly a nightmare, but the biggest problem there is that we've decided that college is for everybody and it's simply not. A huge number of freshmen and flunking out and wasting tons of parental and state money when they should've never been there to start with. We have a great Technical College sysytem here in SC that is often overlooked because we're supposed to push all kids to go to a 4 year school.

Unless you're in a school every day like I am, then you have absolutely no idea what is and isn't taught, so you should limit that part of your argument. You might win some points with others who are clueless, but not with one who knows.

The problem is poverty. Parents living in poverty often can't and typically don't provide a background for their kids that prepares them for schools. My youngest is 5 and just like his older sister, had a lot of ABC/123 skills as a 2 or 3 year old and began reading as a 4 year old in a 4K program that we pay for him to attend. Not many minimum wage folks can handle that so they struggle in 5K and are usually well behind before they ever get started. This state doesn't fund 4K in elementary schools except for kids who need special services. By the time we get these kids in a high school, they are often 4 or 5 years under their proper level in reading, writing, and mathematics. Then with state report cards, our high school are called failures because we can't catch them all up and graduate them as NCLB requires us to do.

    MCR

  • As for education here in New Mexico, poverty and attitude of the family about school are troublesome as well. It's my belief that we need to invest more time and resources in to elementary and early childhood education. That way, here in the mid school we aren't getting 6th graders reading at a 2nd grade or worse reading level.
