Math prob of the day

  • The ratio of dogs to cats at Kassidy's clinic is 4:5

There are 6 more cats than dogs.

The ratio of cats to fish at the same clinic is 3:2

    How many fish are there?

  • d/c = 4/5, so 5d = 4c and 5d - 4c = 0
    c - d = 6, so c = 6 + d

    since 5d - 4c = 0 and c = 6 + d, 5d - (4*(6+d)) = 0, so 5d -24 - 4d = 0, so d = 24

    since c = 6 + d, c = 6 + 24 = 30

    c/f = 3/2, so 2c= 3f
    since c = 30, 3f = 60, so f = 25

    24 dogs, 30 cats, 20 fish

**Editor's note: I am a failure today ... got the ratio of cats/fish backwards in my first try and came up with the wrong number. Accept this re-do as penance.

  • 30 cats, 20 fish, right?

I am a math major. You need to challenge me 3.0.

Are you a teacher? If so, what do you teach? I am going to be a math teacher. I student-taught at Blythwood last semester. The teacher I worked for is elite, a one in a million. I will tell you more about her if you are interested.

You multiply the first ratio by 6, and you get 30 cats and 24 dogs, then, you just multiply by 3/2. I got 72 at first, but then realized I was going by # of dogs.

  • If you are a math major, I likely can't challenge you. I'm really not a math person, I just excel in helping kids understand it for some reason. Perhaps it's because I struggled with mid school math and beyond, that I have a very good idea where their problems lay.

I was really just joking. I am a math major, but I was no good in math in high school either. I just picked math because it was the smallest dept, and there is a demand for math/science.

I am probably a LOT worse at math than you are.

You sound like you are an excellent teacher. With your sense of humor, the students stay entertained, I am sure. As you know, it is all about keeping their attention.

    Where do you teach?

    That is awesome!

I want to teach in a small town as well. I doubt i will make it as far out as that, but I would love the weather out there, i bet. Anyways, that is cool.

Now here is a math problem for you. If you have 13 cats stuck in a tree, and one is licking its butt. And, you have a hurricane in north carolina with winds of up to122 mph.
How many goats has abo gotten pregnant in the last 2 yrs? Hint: his mother only counts as 2.
