you can literally throw a rock and hit a good place for breakfast and brunch...The same with good places to drink...
Thirsy Monk, Lexington Avenue Brewery, Arcade (all sorts of old school arcade games and old Nintendos set up), The Vault, The Southern (also great dinner food) are all places I like to drink at...and all are within walking distance of each other, in downtown Asheville...Four Points, downtown is where work puts me up at (they allow you to workout at the YMCA next door, for free as well)

Hit Salsa's downtown for lunch......phenomenal. If you are into music, check out the lineup for the Orange Peel. They get some good bands. Great shops/restaurants around the Grove Arcade downtown.

Hey Valet -
There's several pretty cool waterfalls just south of Asheville. Looking Glass Falls and Dry Falls are 2 of my favorites (along with Sliding Rock in the summer). Do a little research and you can plot out a neat little side trip to see some of them.

Location is great for outdoor stuff, great fly fishing shop (Hunter Banks), good music pubs (Orange Peel, Grey Eagle), but be prepared for a walking freak show. Most popular bumper sticker - "Stay weird asheville", most popular hair cut - dreadlocks, most popular foot wear - callouses, piercings galore, and the deodorant truck doesn't go there.
You'll have a great time. The mountains that surround Asheville are great. If you like festivals then I'd target www.belecherefestival.com/.

Try www.vrbo.com lots of really cool places in that area. Tupelo Honey is great place to eat both locations.

Grand Bohemian....Great Place. Was just there two weeks ago. Right outside the Biltmore entrance and around shops.

Great town. If you're a big music fan, be sure to check out a show at the Orange Peel. Very cool place and they book a ton of great bands.

The Grove Park Inn is about as good as it gets in the old "grand hotel" style. I've stayed there many times and was never disappointed.

Applewood Manor B&B is wonderful and Nancy and Larry are the best! Tupelo Honey as s omany people have said is great for dinner as well. Applewood is in the historic Montford district and only like a ten minute walk to town.

About 15 miles east of Asheville is a beautiful little town called Black Mountain - full of quaint shops and two of the best bed and breakfast inns I've ever stayed - The Inn Around the Corner and the Red Rocker Inn. The Red Rocker used to serve supper but it has been a few years since I've been there. Good luck.
