OT: Best BBQ You've Ever Had

  • cockfool said...

What's that joint on the way on/off the island in Edisto? That place was good.

    Po Pigs.

With baseball starting tomorrow and spring just around the corner, it got me to thinking about all of the delicious BBQ I'm going to have/make this year. I have had good BBQ from many places, but here are my favorites:

Lexington (NC) BBQ- can't beat it, vinegar based heaven

The Georgia Pig- Exit 28 off of I-95 in Brunswick, GA...best tomato based BBQ in the history of the world; if you're on the way to Florida and you don't stop here, your trip won't be as good as it could have been

Spiced Right- in Lilburn, GA, right outside of Atlanta; they have the best Brunswick Stew that I have ever tasted

I'm not a fan of mustard base, so that's out for me. BBQ has to have a few qualities that make it good: it MUST be smoked, juicy, and the sauce has to be homemade or unique to the maker. In my experience, North Carolina has the best BBQ overall, followed by Georgia. I have not had Texas BBQ, but I'm pretty sure they mostly do beef, and I am strictly talking pork Q in the region. The Palmetto Pig and Doc's do NOT have good BBQ; the only thing that makes those places good is that they are buffet-style, so you get as much as you want.

What is the best BBQ you have eaten?

Parkers in Greenville, NC is about the best I've ever had. For ribs...it's a love/hate but I do like Dreamland ribs. Others say overrated. I can tolerate mustard based sauce but I'm partial to vinegar. In the south, debating BBQ is about like arguing abortion or religon. You offend a mans choice of Que and you might as well slap his momma:)
There is a place in Charlotte called Gone Hog Wild that is really good. Eastern style vinegard based sauce but they do the Dreamland style ribs. Owner is an Alabama native. They also do these great hushpuppies with bits of corn and onion in them. Very good stuff.

  • Henry's Smokehouse in Greenville with the spicy vinegar sauce. It is a must, if you haven't tried it. Their pulled pork is awesome, but their bbq chicken melts in ur mouth. So tasty. Also, very good hash.

Be as nostalgic as you want about palmetto pig, but few places could top Millender's back in the day. Great quality cue and all-u-can-eat for $7.99. Anyone else on here remember Millender's? A close second to Millenders is Shealy's in Batesburg-Leesville

  • I like Lexington BBQ a lot but the "Best" goes to McCabes in Manning, hands down. I'm a dry rub guy for ribs and anything from Memphis is good.

  • Woffordcock's is the best. He smokes a few butts every year for Aiken's Steeplechase.

I will have to try Gone Hog Wild next time I'm up there. There is also a place called Mac's (?-i think) off of South Blvd that has a GREAT brisket.

  • Brown's BBQ in Kingstree is great, but it's not even the best BBQ in Kingstree...that distinction goes to Cooper's Countrystore at the Salters Crossroads. My favorite in SC. I also enjoy the Schoolhouse BBQ in Scranton.

Best BBQ in Columbia is Big T's off Hwy 378.

This!! Acually McKenzies BBQ was better but they are out of business. SORRY, but N.C. doesn"t know what good BBQ is. I just moved back to S.C. after living in N.C. for the past four years and NOWHERE I ate up there had good BBQ. Roasted pork is not BBQ.

I've been to Mac's. The brisket is good, you are right. Overall, not my style of BBQ but it's not a bad place.
Gone Hog Wild is off of Park Rd. There is also a place on South Blvd. near the intersection of Tyvola Rd. and S. Blvd. called Bill Spoons. That's a pretty good Eastern NC style place too.

  • Rudy's in Round Rock, Texas. Only been there once and they knocked it out of the park. I'm sure if I ever go back it won't be near as good as I remember.

  • Miss Myra's - Birmingham The best white sauce anywhere.

Saw's - Birmingham He is originally from NC but went to Bama for college and never went home. He has a vinegar/red sauce that is very tasty also a decent white sauce. Pork is always tender, juicy, and flavorful.

Dreamland is hit or miss on the ribs, but when they are good they are awesome. I think I could eat white bread and sauce everyday from there.

Full Moon has tasty BBQ with a good sauce. You gotta get extra chowchow on the side.

I was not impressed with any BBQ in Memphis.

I have had Po Pigs once. My Dad raved about it, but I must have gone on a bad night. As for the rest of SC, it is all nostalgia. I will always like Maurice's, not because it is good Q, but for family memories.

Personally nothing beats my own BBQ. I always use a dry rub, and doesn't need a sauce even though I will make a white sauce from time to time. I usually use a mixture of pecan and hickory to smoke with.

Alabama has some really good BBQ. It is hard to go wrong with any little hole in the wall place you see here. Some of the franchises though...well, they're franchises, and it in my opinion is hard to be consistent then.

Mustard-based, I'd say Dukes in Orangeburg.

Vinegar-based, the best I've ever had was in Lincolnton, N.C.

Tomato-based, Cozy Corner in Memphis. Also really liked Jim 'n Nick's in Hoover, Ala. Calhoun's Knoxville and Gatlinburg has the best ribs I've ever eaten.

How do you get to Dukes from I-26?

    Much obliged.
