OT: dog breeding question

  • A few years ago I inherited an awesome male black lab due to a death in one of my best friend's family. I've never bred a dog before, but I do know this dog's pedigree is very good. In fact, I've been told there were offers north of $6,000 for this dog back when he was 3 or 4 yrs old. In other words, it would be a waste to not breed this animal. He's 9 but looks 4, is an amazing water dog, has incredible drive and like most labs, is a great family dog.

My question is does anyone know how to find someone who will breed a male lab? If I had a female it would be easy to find a stud. Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with a female lab who is "worthy" of breeding with this dog. Do any breeders offer the reverse of a stud fee? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • At nine yrs old he may or may not be potent but when you say his pedigree is very good, what do you mean by that? Are you talking both parents and several grand and great-grand parents were champion show dogs or do you mean they were known as good hunting dogs?

Assuming your info IRT offers of $6k are true, I would guess that those offers were based on him being a good hunting dog, rather than a show dog.

You might visit the Onofrio and/or Infodog web sites to see when the next dog show or hunting events are in your area and try to attend. At these events you could inquire of other lab owners and possibly obtain some helpful information.

You not only want to know more about his pedigree, but what type titles has been won , etc...

Lastly, and most importantly, you MUST make sure his bloodlines have good hips and elbows...If he's the type dog you say he is, someone had him OFA checked and its on record what his hip rating is...If not, then you are taking a risk, no matter what was paid for him or how great he looks...Poor hips can have a dog limping and eventually put down by 18 months...If you do find a female, ask to see her OFA certification.

  • When I say his pedigree is good I mean there are multiple field champions in his line. He is not a show dog and I don't know if any dogs in his line were. I'm actually just now getting around to ordering the 4 generation pedigree so I can't give specifics on what championships were won, although I know there are some. As far as OFA#s go, my dog and both parents are "Good" in the hip category.

    Thanks for the feedback

  • I'd breed him before he hits double digits, that's for sure. If not then you might be SOL.

We just bred our Labs. It was a one and done experience. I will not regret it because we got an awesome liter. But it is a difficult job if both Mom and Dad work outside the home. But now keep in mind, we had both the Male and Female labs...so it was easy for us. I think your best bet is to start looking for a female.

By the way, our liter was 8 pups. 4 Black, 2 Yellow and 2 Chocolates. And the ratio of male to female was exactly split down the middle. And absolute perfect liter! You will have zero problem finding good homes. In our case, we have been able to keep up with all the pups....and they all are incredible dogs already for their owners!

It's really a powerful thing to watch. Like you, our male comes from champion blood lines. Our feemale was the runt in her liter. She has incredible drive...will play ball and play in the pool all day long. We were worried that she would not be a good mother. Amazing to watch those mother instincts kick in. She was a master of being a Mom.
And once the 6 weeks kicked in...she was ready to get back to her old self. Here I am trying to talk you in to it now! LOL Let me end how I started...it is a lot of work breeding.

  • I have bred Pitbull's before. I had to weed out potential buyers and not sell to someone I thought was going to fight them. You will not have that problem. 6K sounds like way more than I have ever heard of someone paying for a dog, so don't expect to get that much for the pups. Normally, the stud gets the pick of the litter, they don't normally split it down the middle, so that is one thing you will face. If you are a dog lover and love this dog, think about how many dogs are in shelters and such. Just a thought. If it was me with my dog, I would breed him just to get a puppy to help keep him young, and to continue to have a buddy after his time is through. Maybe you can find someone who would give more than one puppy to you. Like I said, the stud normally gets the pick of the litter.

As for finding a mate, you can put an ad in the trader. The trader is where most breeders sell/ buy/ advertise for breeding. The devils playground, or the internet, is also a good place to get the word out. It is amazing to see these cute little guys grow up and become such loyal, honest, and steadfast friends. I could never imagine my life without a dog. I wish you luck, and feel that this should be an easy process for you: just use the Carolina Trader and the Internet and you will quickly find someone you can work with. Have all the papers on your dog beforehand, and make sure you see the papers on the female. He is not too old to breed, he probably has at least two more yrs, but start soon. Post a pic of the guy, I want to see him, as he sounds like a good looking dude. PM me if you have any questions, or send me pics of him, and the pups when they are born.

  • Thanks for the responses. He actually bred a bunch with the previous owner (I think it was 7 or 8 times). Not sure if that makes a difference or not. I certainly don't expect to get 6k for a puppy. The 6k I was referring to was an offer when this dog was fully grown and had thousands of dollars worth of training under his belt. It seems insane to me, but apparently it's true. I don't even want a stud fee, just one of his pups.

    Thanks again for the advice.

    Hopefully the picture attachments worked.

  • Thousands of dogs put down everyday in shelters, and then there are people that would pay 6k for a dog "with good blood lines"... spare me...thats what this world has come to grumble
