Time for a new truck and it won't be a friggin....

  • Ford F-150. It's the only Ford I've ever owned and the last. I thought I had a great truck until it got over 100,000 miles. Being the wise man I am, I actually bought it simply because I thought it looked so much better than the GMC - this was in 2005 - but the new GMC's look pretty good and they could look like dog sh&t and I wouldn't buy another Ford. Between coils, plugs, timing chain tensioners and a sundry of other stuff BS I've spent more on repairs on that one damn truck than the other four vehicles I have combined.
Any Dodge fans out there? - got to have 4WD. Do not want a Toyota or Nissan.

  • Buy American. Even if its not Ford. My ford is closing in in 200K and no major issues(must find wood to knock on).

  • My dad LOVES his toyota. He's never had a single issue with it.

Seeing how that's not what you want, the new Silverados are pretty sweet.

  • +1 for GMC and Chevy! Might be biased, though. :-)

  • I have an F-150 and I was thinking about buying a new one and it dawned on me that my truck had barely reached the half way point in it's usefulness. I took this picture about two months ago.

  • I've had a tundra, an F - 150, and a ram. Never had a problem with my tundra or my ram, which now has 227,000 miles on it, but had all kinds of issues with my F 150. A ton of issues with tires, alignment, etc. Can't beat the price deals you can get on Rams right now either.

  • I had a ford f150 with 140k on it. never really any issues though the transmission seemed to skip a little bit but nothing that alarmed me too much or caused me to get it fixed. bought a toyota tundra last year and love it.

    nice^^^^^
i took a pic and put on facebook when my 02 f 350 4x4 went over a quarter million miles. that was about 10 k ago. i had a trans repair at about 200k and i recently had to put a new thermostat in it......that's it (knocking on wood). it still has the original water pump for God's sake and power everything works like it did 10 years ago. the ford 5.4 triton is up there with toyo 22r as one of the best engines ever made.
sounds like the OP got a lemon because ford trucks are what people that know what they're doing usually use as fleet trucks.
i grew up a chevy fan but wouldn't buy one now if it was a steal. they wrecked thier reputation by building garbage trucks that rusted out, hood creased, doors sagged, paint fell off etc-- they may make good trucks now, but i wouldn't know. i got out of a gm suv recently and chuckled because i had to close (slam) the door a second time to get it closed

i can buy this^^^ in a 04 f 350 7.3 deisel, i had a front end that would shake like hell when it hit a hard bump at 60 mph....an old timer in a hole n the wall shop in downtown charlotte realigned it and it never did it again. the dbags at ford couldn't fix it

tell me more about this truck. is it an 05 4x4? that should be a v8 right? i change my plugs every 100k miles whether it needs it or not (sarcasm, but true). did you buy this truck new? at 2.5 times the miles, i still have the original timing chain and pretty sure original serpentine belt. how much do you trust the folks that have worked on it?

  • 05 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road 4x4...never had a problem 110k miles...highly reccomend especially with gas prices. i can fill mine up for $60...went turkey hunting with a buddy this weekend who has a Z71...watched him pump $110 worth of gas in it.....good luck on your search.

  • I just bought an '11 Ram last July. It hauls ass, the 4wd works great, smoothest riding truck i've ever ridden in, handles more like a small SUV, and its spacious as hell. I also got the Ramboxes. Love those things. The gas mileage is better than my 05 Dakota 2wd, but its still only about 16-20. I've only towed a trailor once, and it was a box trailor on a very windy day, but the truck had no problems towing it. Gas mileage that day wasn't great, but it was about what I expected, 10 mpg. All I've ever driven has been dodges and as long as they'll make em, I'll buy em.

I think this is good advice.

I have an 06 Tacoma TRD Sport package. Not as many miles but I don't have a long drive to work each day. I can fill the thing up for around $60. Very reliable truck.

  • I've got a 2001 Chevy Tahoe with 198,000 miles on it. Here are the things I have had to get fixed:

1 power window (about 125,000 miles)
    alternator (150,000)
    fuel pump (170,000)
    water pump (180,000)

It's been the best vehicle I've ever owned and I'll definately buy another one in 2 or 3 years. It's due for plugs, tires, and brakes before football season.

  • I have a 2007 Chevy Silverado 1500 LTZ and would not trade it for the world! I have always been a Chevy person. Dodge is know to have small annoying things go wrong with it. Such as emblems and doorknobs falling off. Ford is just Ford, it's like buying the generic version of a product. Go Chevy or GMC!

I was a Ford guy until I bought a 4wd Ram Megacab in '08. I just traded it on a a '12. Go see Lonny at Wilson Chrsyler in Winnsoboro. The dealerships in the midlands couldnt touch his deal. See the link below for pictures if you like. I may have grabbed page 2 so you might want to scroll back to the first post. I've had it a month now and it is the quietest smoothest riding truck I've ever had. Says a lot for a 4wd 2500 390hp hemi with CAI, and duals (it'll get loud if you want it to). Gas mileage aint pretty but I didnt but the truck thinking it would be a gas sipper. I think the 1500s do pretty well though.

Yes 2005 5.4 - bought with about 25k miles. Had to replace timing guides, chain, couple gaskets that to the tune of $2250. I've probably spent $4,000 since I've had it on non-maintenance stuff. Per the F-150 Forum site, I'm starting the think 2005 was just a bad year - you could read for weeks on the site about the problems people have had (myself included) with the plugs and coils on the 2005. Apparently, Snap On or somebody had to make a special tool after 2005 to get the plugs out after they seize up.
Truck pulls like a mother and holds up well for what I put it through - body, suspension, alignment and stuff is tough, but mechanically I'm scared to ever try again.

wow...i'd hate ford trucks too if i had an experience like that. i have a small sample size to base things on (3 or 4 ford tucks in the last 15 years). they have all been very good to me. there used to be a shop owner that posted here that seemed to know his stuff--wish he'd chime in.
