What book are you reading right now?

I just started reading "Origins" by Neil DeGrasse Tyson, the astrophysicist. It is an overview of the 14 billion year history of the universe and how it formed. Pretty interesting stuff.

Any other good books, preferably non-fiction, I should look into next?

I like Baldacci too. Me and you have similar taste in authors, it sounds like. Do you like Michael Connolly, Lee Child, Stephen Hunter, Robert Crais, or Harlan Coben?

I've read a lot of Connolly. The Bosch books are great but also can be about as frustrating as reading Robicheaux books. I like Coben. I'm trying to read his stuff in sequence. I've mixed in a few of the stand alone novels by Coben as well.

Finishing up a fiction fix a the moment with the 5th book in the Song of Ice and Fire series. Looking to delve back into the non-fiction realm. I've had Undaunted Courage by Stephen Ambrose (Lewis & Clark expedition) sitting in my bookcase for years now and have yet to read it. Thinking about jumping on that next. I've enjoyed everything else I've read from Ambrose, so I assume this one is just as good.

i read the george martin song of ice and fire. i assume you are watching game of thrones on hbo?
cock at law, memory of light is the 14th and final book of a series called "the wheel of time". started by robert jordan. he died, and brandan sanderson wrote the last 2, including the final memory of light. its a typical battle of good vs evil. world on the brink of destruction. it chronicles a regular farm boy as he transforms into a magical warrior to save the world from darkness.
i just recently signed up with an audio book club. several years ago i read the 11 book series "legend of the seeker" by terry goodkind. now i am getting them on audio and listening to them when i am doing different tasks. this has opened up a different world for me. i love the audio. but i love my kindle 3g too.

I liked "A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson. I still pick it up from time to time. I'm reading some crappy fiction right now, though.

    Man, the offseason stinks....

I thought that book was great. Aside from the science, fascinating to see all the back stabbing, mud slinging, character assasination that goes on in the scientific field. Those guys may be brilliant, but they don't like differing opinions.

There were a bunch of ogres in those bleak times...throw in the Visigoths for a few laughs...

All things considered, the Visigoths weren't so bad. Anything they did was by and large considered to be normal acts of war. Ironically they became strong allies to the empire later on.

The Vandals and Huns were a nasty bunch though.

A song of Ice and Fire might be my favorite books of all time. Such a rich universe.

Agreed. That, and the Dark Tower series, by Stephen King. Dark Tower is a bit more twisted, but very interesting.

could not concur more. The third book, A Storm of Swords, blew my freakin mind. If anyone watches the show on HBO i would highly suggest reading A Storm of Swords before the third season comes out in march.

i liked them alot too. my only problem with them, is just like larry mcmurtry in lonesome dove novels, they relish killing off the best characters. if george martin kills off any more, good guys, there won't be anyone else worth following. just like larry mcmurtry killed off gus and newt. now why in the world would he kill off newt? its crazy.

  • John MacArthur's "Tale of Two Sons" and "Slave" are life changing as well as Francis Schaeffer's "True Spirituality". "The Cost of Discipleship" is probably Bonhoeffer's most known work. Really enjoy anything by George Mueller too. Two other must reads are David Platt's "Radical" and "Follow Me".

  • Nonfiction: try "The Admirals", the 5star admirals who won the war at sea, very interesting historical insights, by Walter Borneman. Fiction: "Matterhorn" A novel of the Vietnam War by Karl Marlantes, a combat Marine nam veteran who knows whereof he speaks. Also, the John Rain novels by Barry Eisler, about a Japanese-American assassin are on a level with M. Connelly, Sandford, Crais, Child, and Nelson demille. If you like dogs, Crais' latest, "Suspect" is a must read.

Even if you just read the first book, The Gunslinger, you'll be impressed.

King is a master storyteller. I've read a ton of King in my day, and this isn't typical him. However this series is my favorite.

"How to Live or A life of Montaigne " by Sarah Bakewell is excellent as is "Antifragile" by Nasim Taleb.

I'm always working on 2 or 3 at a time. Right now I'm listening to "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett, which I had always heard was brilliant. I'm reading The Forgotten by David Baldacci and my current non-fiction book is Sandy Koufax by Jane Leavy. She also wrote a great biography on Mickey Mantle and I think she's working on one about Babe Ruth now.

Pillars of the Earth is one of my favorite books. It is awesome.
