george mcgovern rip

  • he will go down in history as one of the biggest losers in american presidential politics. but, as he once said, there are worse things in life than losing an election. such as winning on the basis of felonies committed and trashing of our constitution and laws.

    he was a fighter pilot who served honorably, but was portrayed as a pacifist cowardly type. he believed in social welfare and was depicted as a socialist.

    he lived a long honorable life. compare that to dick nixon, who died and will go down in history as an ignominous fraud and creep

    the nation sometimes chooses the wrong people. but we are a strong nation, we will persist. but sometimes good people get dumped & ridiculed.

    george deserved better. sometimes our nation just does not want to face the truth. its easier to find scapegoats and hate your neighbor....as long as you get one more vote, whats the difference?

    not much other than honor.

    McGovern flew nearly three dozen bombing missions over Nazi-occupied territory in WWII and wanted to fly more but his superiors wouldn't let him risk his life further. He was hit by enemy fire on multiple occasions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, an honor he shared with George H.W. Bush.

    His campaign advisors begged him to use his war heroism in the 1972 presidential race, but he refused to bring it up saying he just did what any American would have done.

    In a series of interviews on C-SPAN a few years ago McGovern related how Richard Nixon contacted him near the end of Nixon's life and asked McGovern to accept his apology for questioning his patriotism and using "dirty tricks" during the 1972 campaign. McGovern told Nixon he forgave him.

    George McGovern was a better American and better human being than I am.

    First of all, speaking only for myself, I wouldn't have said a word if Dr. Graham had passed. There's a big difference between a birthday and a death.

    Secondly, if George McGovern had just run newspaper ads accusing those not voting his way in an election of not being Christian then died, I for one would not have uttered a word of criticism if posters of the ilk he had just insulted did make negative comments.

    Finally, if the mods had deemed this thread political, I wouldn't have argued.

  • 3.0 isn't going to zap a post like this or the one below unless a grown man wants to act like a child and turn it into a political discussion rather than simple happy birthday or RIP thread.

    Those who might not have liked McGovern were mature enough to not respond to this thread in "CITIZEN'S ARREST" fashion to try to get it banned. If you don't turn it into a controversial post, 3.0 isn't going to touch posts like this or the Graham.

    Now I'm sure someone is going to come into this thread now and make me look like a fool with that last statement. Hopefully not.

    i am sorry folks got into a huge spat over billy graham. i recall billy graham on tv as a young boy. he was/is a great preacher. inspiring speaker charismatic.

    i would not comment on the billy graham thread. i try not to deride older living people who i grew up admiring. i dont agree with grahams politics, plus he is just too fragile & old to pick on, imho.

    yes he made mistakes like we all do. he is entitled to his political opinions. all things considered his life has been more productive than, say mine for example, and thus i refuse to denigrate him

    i guess i denigrated nixon & some others in my original post, but that is just what i do, politically speaking

    in real life i have manners & try not to treat respected elders with a bad attitude

    i like dogs & little kids. i am pretty polite in general. i only exorcize my demons behind a facade

    happy birthday to everybody whose birthday it is, my granddaughter will be six in a few days....birthdays are good
