politics and religion are about to go bye bye from this board

  • It's up to all of you what happens next.

  • I read what you posted a few days ago regarding this subject and your issue with the epithets being used in the barnyard. Primarily, as far as I can tell, that would be a single poster...except in jest.
I, for one, do enjoy the politics and discussions, and would like them to continue as it can be very beneficial to see what other people think. Lately, there has been more vitriol than usual with inappropriate religious attacks at which point I thought the subject would be locked. However, as you stated, you can't read every post.
I have no personal animosity towards any other posters although I do have one on ignore.

  • It seems relatively typical - strong disagreements that can provoke some strong comments, but by and large I think there is only 1(maybe 2) that really get to far into attack mode

I hope it's not banned for a bad apple or two

  • 3.0, you have a tough job that I wouldn't take for all the tea in China! Thank you for taking the time to do it,

Three prefaces before I make my point.

    1. You're the boss it doesn't matter what I or anyone else thinks.
    2. I remember the first sports site I ever went on years ago. I was amazed they had a board like this and frankly wondered why given all the grief it brings they would bother. But most have one, so i guess the market demands it
    3. I have a unique perspective because the first posts I ever made on the Barnyard were about the deal at North Dakota where the NCAA is banning their nickname, the Fighting Sioux. I posted that since I'm not Native American I'd never criticize someone who is Native American and offended by an Indian nickname. I just had no idea why in the world it was the NCAA's concern. I was hit pretty hard by some of the, harumph, more volatile Libs on the board for that. So, I've taken incoming from both sides.

Now to my point. I was taught you don't discuss religion in publlc by my father, who was a former Baptist minister. I can't imagine ever bringing it up on a board. But when other posters do bring it up to justify their position on an issue and make moral dispersions on segments of the population with their religious views as the basis, I'm gonna use what i learned in 12 years of perfect attendance in Sunday school to give it right back to them.

That said, this gay marriage thing has religious overtones all over it. As repulsive as I may consider some of the positions being justified by religion on this subject on the board to be, they're being used in many, many environments across the country. It's not like it's some fringe position like that church in Kansas that protests soldiers funerals because we have gays and lesbians in service.

Simply put, I don't know how you talk about this without getting into religion, since many people say religion is at the heart of their opinion on this political issue. But, as I said 3.0, you're the boss. Again, thanks.

  • I understand...the next thread under this one is titled "so mitt likes to pick on gays". The conversation isn't so bad, but the headlines that are made purely for baiting are pretty pathetic.

I hope we can keep talking politics/religion. Perhaps there could be more locking of threads that get out of hand, and if it becomes a pattern for whichever poster, they could be banned from the Yard.

I realize I myself am guilty of starting threads that are bound to become heated, so I will make an effort not do that as much.

There should be no guilt for starting a potentially heated thread. The fault lies with the respondents.

Opinion is to be expected on a site which is dedicated to off topic conversation. As long as there is diversity there will be differences of opinions and beliefs. At times strongly opinionated comments result in heated debate.

There is a moderate level of skill involved in the appropriate exchange of thoughts and ideas supporting one's position.

Every poster has demonstrated that requisite skill level.

On rare occasions the level of discourse rises to an unacceptable level relying on vitriolic and caustic ad hominem attacks on other's beliefs or opinions in an effort to support their own or weaken their opponents.

The guilt and responsibility needs to be placed upon and taken by those who demonstrate poor form in the application of Barnyard etiquette.

I certainly hope the future opportunity to discuss political and religious topics is not eliminated - I ‘m not sure of just how much crude high school jokes and links to YouTube videos of guys getting hit in the nuts I could tolerate.

also, maybe an updated guidelines about political/religious posting could help?

    I agree.

There's some amount of trolling that goes on with a message board. When you are talking about sports, it ends up being no big deal. When it's talking about politics/religion, it gets really heated really quickly. I don't think there's a ton of trolling on here lately, but I think anything that the mods deem as trolling can be eliminated. I'd like to continue to have civil discussion, as well, though.

  • since i am part of the problem & not part of the solution, i beg only offer: if somebody goes to excess in cussing out another poster, or anybody else for that matter, then i think one personal message advising them to cease & desist would be sufficient. if they dont abide, then bust them for a while or forever, this includes me, of course, as i am guilty of being snide & of chumming the waters.

if that is the height of the bar, then i wont be around. i wont pretend to be different. it would be a lie. i have been run off before.

but, truly, i think the profanity could be done without. sometimes, for effect i think maybe but not just defaming others. i may view the views of others as asinine but i dont have to call their parents nasty sounding names. it can be done better....more scalpel less pickax

Look over on the thread about Gay marriage. One jerk just compared two gay people wanting to get married to someone wanting to marry a frigging animal.

The problem goes way beyond profanity.

In the interest of full disclosure I must give credit to CockAtLaw for the gist of that line as he indicated in a previous thread he would "much rather have an OT board full of crude high school jokes and links to YouTube videos of guys getting hit in the nuts."

As humorous as that could be, I still prefer a mix of all subject matter to include controversial topics and I implore everyone to do their fair share of due diligence in order to facilitate the continued availability of this forum in order that we in the 'Yard remain on the cutting edge of entertainment and enlightenment.

  • I've stewed on this all night, and into the morning. I think we should leave the religion and politics somewhere else. There have been many solid statements in this thread that I entirely agree with.

What it came down to for me was this...

This board should be attracting people to the big spur, not the other way around. I'd like for this board to be more of a fun place. Like someone said, " more you tubes of guys getting kicked in the jewels."

So...in essence let's not make any more political or religious threads. There are very strong feelings about both, and strong feelings lead to awful arguments. Surely there is some where else on the internet that you could discuss those topics.

Now with that said, could we grant "Godfather" the exemption here? He's been positing his daily garnet for sometime, and all he does is present the information in a positive way. If you guys do not see that as fair, than he could also post those elsewhere.

    I'd like your feedback please

Based on that, nothing becomes inappropriate. Ever.

Somethings are over the line for society. Comparing consenting adults of the same gender wishing to marry to someone sick enough to want to be with an animal for goodness sakes is such raw bigotry and hate that it's right up there with child porn and cracks about someone's kids or mother or calling someone a "n........r.".
