scientists say global warming=climate change

  • I wonder how many folks aren't on TBS, bc factories would have produced their computers but they don't support companies that have large carbon footprints. I bet they live in tents too, bc they don't want to live in homes framed with wood from trees that have been cut down.

Any of you folks that preach global warming allowing your actions to back up what you support? Or are you all a bunch of 'chicken hawks'?

i was merely passing in info from what people call "scientists". i am not sure if they "preach" this, its only about scientific research and stuff like that. it is not at all as informative as random nonscientists on internet boards, to be sure. like shoe salesmen can "back" things up. climatologists, nasa, natl academy of science, all the science groups around the world, no, i am sure that they cant "back" their claims made.

but, here is another link, it quotes science & stuff but wont deter high school grads and other experts from scoffing

i am not "lol" cause its quite past that now but really i am soooo sorry for mentioning "scientists"- you probably dont believe in them either. just a bunch of al gore clones..

So they're 100% positive that we would not have extreme weather if it weren't for humans? That we'd have perfect weather?

But I'm speaking of the folks that used to be members of TBS, but, bc they support changing our lives to reduce our carbon footprint, have thrown out the computers and tvs they used to own bc big factories produced them, 18 wheelers shiped them, etc. Or live in a tent, bc they don't want to live in a house made from wood that came from a tree that got cut down. Or, are there some 'chicken hawks' here that support climate change, but don't own an electric car? Or still aren't gardening their own food? Or still supporting that cable company that has a fleet of large SUVs and utility vans? I'm guessing some of you walk to the library to get online and join us here on TBS.

the folks to whom you are addressing do not exist...however, I do think that you are not getting the message...YOU are the one who is supposed to live in a tent, walk to work, and eat tofu...get with program man! They call it increased temperatures that are completely unrelated to artificially high CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere.

Man is causing artificially high CO2 concentration levels in the atmosphere. This can cause other temperature affecting causes to be exaggerated. For example, increased solar activity that would otherwise cause global temperature increases by .01 degrees may cause a change of 0.2 degrees. It is more of an accelerant than it is a cause, but it does make things that would otherwise not be as bad or extreme, worse or more extreme than absent the artificially increased CO2 levels.

It would be ridiculous to throw out our computers because they are already built. No one is advocating this. What people are saying is that it would be great to get our energy, to the extent currently possible, from solar or wind energy sources rather than fossil fuel energy sources. As we further develop the technology to efficiently harness these sources, we will continually reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. One of the main benefits of acting now is that we can gradually switch over before it is too late.

I just started my career and am still paying off debt so I am unable to buy a Tesla or other 100% electric car right now. We do have a Prius that gets over 60mpg for our highway driving. After I have paid down some debt, I fully plan on getting a Chevy Volt or a Nissan Leaf for city driving (100% electric). I looked at the Volt rather than the Prius but my wife does a lot of highway driving for her job and the Prius actually gets better mpgs for longer distances than the Volt.

I had to trade in my truck to get the Prius, but it was well worth it. Our gas expenses have been reduced substantially.

I don't know if that is really accurate or not. Most reasonable people who advocate for a transition to renewable energy sources recognize that we are all on this planet together and it would be great if we all do our part. Some people take advantage of every situation, but to sit here and say "I'm not going to do it because someone else isn't" doesn't really help anyone or the planet.

100% positive??? Since when is this the benchmark by what anybody does anything? Was Apple 100% positive the ipod or ipad or iphone would be a hit before they began production.

If this is your threshold to do anything, then go ahead and ignore science. Science isn't about 100%, it's about determining the most likely answer based on all available and accurate information, after developing a hypothesis and testing it using repeatable experiments.

100%, that doesn't exist as a benchmark, and it shouldn't.

Is the Prius your only car?

Have you canceled your cable - TWC doesn't own a fleet of all electric vehicles. Will you purchase another computer when yours gets too old? Are you planting your own garden, or buying from neighbors that are selling theirs? Or do you still shop at the grocery store, where 18 wheelers deliver product? Will you purchase another home built with lumber, from trees that were cut down, or will you only purchase homes built with re-used lumber, or composite?

All of these are causes of higher CO2 that man has an impact on, be directly, or by shipping/maintenance methods.

Ok, so if "artificially high CO2 concentrations" from man are at the very least "an accelerant" for global warming why is it that temperatures were higher 600 years prior to the invention of the combustion engine than they are now? Sometimes just smidgen of common sense is in order.

I wasn't around 600 years ago and I am not a science historian. My guess is that perhaps 600 years ago was an era of increased solar activity that could affect temperatures. To act as if burning millions of tons of fossil fuels each year and releasing all of that CO2 in the atmosphere all at once when it takes natural processes millions of years to produce those fossil fuels is, at a minimum, equally devoid of common sense.

Neither you nor I have researched this extensively or conducted experiments and published articles in peer-reviewed journals. However, the people who have done that say it is a problem. Ignoring 98% of the experts in the field also seems to lack some common sense.

No, we also have an Acura. This is the car I get rid of when I am able to get a 100% electric. We only drive the Acura as a secondary vehicle though. If we are going somewhere together or if one of us is traveling a greater distance than the other, then we use the Prius.

No, I haven't cancelled my cable. I'm not advocating for me being the only person to do anything. I am hopeful that in the future other people will also believe CO2 concentrations are important.

I am sure I will purchase another computer when I need one.

We do plant our own garden and if we do go buy vegetables we tend to go to the farmer's market or Whole Foods (I think they generally sell locally grown items).

Why is it that you only feel some steps should be taken if we can completely eliminate all fossil fuels? What is the fascination with the all or nothing mentality? That's like saying I want to lose 20 pounds and if I can't lose all 20 pounds tomorrow, I won't even work out because what's the point.

What does cutting trees down have to do with anything? How does that affect CO2 levels, sorry, I'm ignorant on this point.

Well, that is a different question. Now you're asking if increased global temperatures as a result of CO2 concentrations is actually a bad thing, not whether it exists or not. Are you saying it's not bad for us?

I'm at work, so I don't have all the data at hand, but the Earth has warmed substantially faster in the last 150 or so years than it has during any other warming period in recorded history.
