  • when the pres said he woud raise the minimum wage to $9.50 per hour if he was elected?

    that was a good one.

As someone who currently works for minimum wage, an extra 2.25 an hour would be tremendously appreciated.

Joe, please don't make me explain the effects of raising the minimum wage and the government artificially establishing the value of an employee's labor. Please no.

recall that he admittedly lacked the experience, record of accomplishments, etc. normally necessary to be pres and so he ran on a dreamy platform of "hope and change."

breaking campaign promises = lack of hope and change.

lack of hope and change = someone white people would not have voted for in the numbers they did.

lack of white votes = pres mccain.

dude is a fraud and he gets away with every bit of it.

I don't think you're wrong, but not necessarily sure this was the plan. Political parties have taken short term losses to make themselves look better before though.

I took two econ classes. I was actually a business major for about 5 minutes. I know the macroeconomic theories behind it.

Still, a high minimum wage would benefit me greatly in the short term, and could potentially keep me from avoiding taking out a loan to get through grad school. For selfish reasons I would support it.

Minimum wages need to be raised periodically. Our last three presidents have done so. It needs to be increased to keep in line with inflation. For example the minimum wage in 1968 was the equivalent of 10 dollars today.

no, what you have when you have a poster running away from even the slightest simple reply to a simple question repeatedly, what you have is a failure to communicate

dutch has nothing with which to inform me, ergo he cannot communicate. or, you could just look at it as cowardice....yellow stripe and all that.

I'll give him credit for chutzpah. After his little thread was deleted and he had even conservatives asking him why he wouldn't just answer the simple question. "are you a birther,"

Determination while you're being humiiated. He has it in droves.

I was having a debate with John Hunt, where John voiced concern about the vailidity of Obama's birth certificate, Social Security Number and birth announcement in the Honolulu paper.

I, tongue in cheek, posed questions about a bunch of GOP candidates including Abe Lincoln.

Dutch30805 jumped in about John McCain. So I asked if he was a birther as John appears to at least be thinking about being.

Of course in the exchange I was asked if I was a truther. I'm not and I said so. No big deal.

    That's the backstory.

it is no big deal. being a birther is fairly commonplace in america.

Gotcha...thanks...i followed some of it...I'm pretty certain the birth certificate issue is irrelevant at this point...valid or not...I don't think being a "birther" is inherently good or bad

My original point to John was that "birthers" are "good" for the Democratic Party, which is running a historically weak President for re-election with a historically bad economic situation. They benefit tremendously when Republicans go on and on about fake birth certificates and Social Security numbers instead of the lousy economy.

The lesson swing voters who like Obama personally but don't like the job he's done see is "Obama's not competent but the opposition is out of touch and appears nutty."

Oh well, the first lesson of politics is never interrupt your opponent when he's committing suicide, so I really oughta shut up instead of warning y'all.

For the sake of clarity - there were two issues in our discussions

The potential reelection of Obama as it relates to the right’s use of the “birther” issue

The lack of disclosure regarding the life of Obama

I offered no discussion on the former other than to say that he might be re-elected and that his governance was not the point of my comments. My exact comment was, … I have not made any comments positive or negative regarding his governance. He may prove to be the best president ever and he may win reelection…

My issue was specifically focused on the latter - how little we know about the man who is the most powerful leader in the world.

You are of the opinion my concern regarding this issue symbolically lends itself to the possible re-election of Obama –Possibly so, but again not the focus of my complaint.

My issue is solely based upon his lack of transparency and the sealing of all his historical records.

It’s not fruitful to revisit all the particulars of my concerns other than to say his birthplace is strictly anecdotal to my issue. I never said I didn’t believe he was born in Hawaii – in fact I said I’ve seen the evidence proffered and therefore I’m convinced by these facts of his birthplace.

However I am skeptical. My skepticism is based on his sealing all of his records – from his birth to his education records to his transcripts, his writings and papers, his passports. There is no public historical information regarding the most powerful man in the world.

Putting aside any political advantage this concern may have on the independent block of voters – on its surface, doesn’t that seem odd to you?

I don’t care if Dutch is or isn’t a birther my question to him was my attempt at “tongue-in-cheek humor…borrowing and playing on a quote from Homer Stokes , “Is you is or is you ain’t…”

i knew your question was tongue in cheek. Their desperation at hearing my political views is cute right?

i will say that i think the pres' keeping certain records "closed" is just to set up an ambush. As long as he leaves the info out of public view people will continue to talk about his origins--by saying "birther" stuff about him being from kenya, muslim, unamerican, etc.. Ambush set and millions around the country having taken the birther bait, the pres (and his fans like 81 alum, arron burr, and tacos) can pretend EVERYONE who disagrees with the pres is ignorant like the "birthers."

bottom line if the pres wanted to put all these quetsions to bed once and for all he could. Daylight would answer all questions and i'm convinced he's as american as they come. He chooses NOT TO because he would rather use the situation to marginalize americans who are otherwise predisposed to oppose him and his views. It's "politics as usual" despite the fact white voters were sold an end to that junk + "hope and change," etc..

fwiw i think the "is you is or is you aint" phrasing originates with louis jordan. I've supplied a link. great music. Oh Brother is one of my favorite movies no doubt
