Spurnotes 3-14 Offensive questions

  • Have no idea why the people at the big spur insist on busting Garcia's chops. You make it sound like Shaw played great and Garcia was a dog. It's just not true. Shaw showed promise? really, well he did make some nice runs, but Garcia made many more nice runs. I can not think of one throw that Shaw made that I said WOW that was a great throw, I do remember 2 throws against Auburn that were pretty damn bad. Yes Garcia made some bad one's as well but many many more good than bad.Just my opinion but there is not a chance in hell Shaw will beat out Garcia, Shaw will play 2-3 series a game and get better as year goes on. He needs those 2-3 series in order to be ready for the 2012 season. Someone is going to have to tell me just when Shaw played better than Garcia. Garcia really didn't play as bad in the bowl game as you'll want to make it seem.

          Tend to agree with you.

He played pretty awful in the bowl game. And to say there is "no way in hell" that Shaw beats Garcia is crazy. The simple fact that Garcia partied the night before our bowl game (Tony said that some of the story was true, meaning he did party) lets me know that it is definitely possible that Shaw can overtake Garcia. Not to mention Tony has said numerous times that this WILL be an open competition and that Shaw has a legit shot to win the job.

            • I think we have a huge shot at winning the SEC this year. I think the biggest problem is Garcia's professionalism. He wasn't even supposed to play in bowl game except for the simple fact that Connor Shaw had the flu.

              • U. of F. has 3 national championships two of those were won using rotating quarterbacks, both had qbs who would win the Heisman trophy. I don't think they are planning on giving those two back despite the opinion of some on rotating qbs.

There are multiple reasons to rotate qbs: (1) Call it Smelley/Garcia is when both quarterbacks have big holes in their game, Smelley had the knowledge but not the talent, Garcia had the talent but lacked the knowledge, then you the coaching staff is just trying to limit the hurt; (2) you have two good qbs and you are just trying to rotate and get a great one, maybe one guy has a unique skill set that makes a good change of pace, call this scenario David Greene/DJ Shockley; (3) you've got two talented qbs, one lacks experience, one lacks focus, call this Garcia/Shaw.

The ball is in Garcia's camp, there's no reason he shouldn't start, IF HE DOES THE WORK. But he's never done more than "just enough" of that to stay on the roster, hopefully this year is different, but the thought from Tony that he wouldn't be surprised to see rotating qbs says that there's doubt from a lot of corners that Garcia will take that next step.

This week should start to answer some questions, if Garcia doesn't show that he's head and shoulders above Shaw in spring camp then it is just a matter of time before we see a lot more of Shaw and less of Garcia.

                  Agree-

I don't think you see as much every-other down type of "rotation", like we all use to see.

                    • If our oline plays great it wont matter who the QB is, I think both can hand the ball off to Lattimore just fine, then hit the pass here and there to alshon, he's not that hard of a target to hit. I think the o-line has a chance to be great as long as we can solidify the RT spot, and if AJ Cann can step up and take over at LG.

We've got more receivers than just Alshon and having a QB that will throw the ball around more will help us out a lot more as well. I hope we use our tight ends more this year like we did a few years ago and not just as blocking tight ends. I think Garcia will be just fine and he'll do even more on his own to improve than we saw last year.

You put "no way in hell" in quotes, so i searched through the message you were quoting to find that phrase. Didn't find it.

I don't think he's saying that there's "no way in hell" that Garcia loses out to Shaw. I'm not sure anyone has. I think the point was that Garcia's not some scrub. He was successful last year, if imperfect. I think Shaw has a higher ceiling, but I can see many scenarios where Garcia holds onto the starting job.

Rotating QB's is brutal. We have seen it. We rotate we will not have a big season. Flat out sucks.

we were rotating between Chris Smelley and Garcia as a freshman.

We had a bad OL coached by John Hunt.

We didn't have a game changer at RB.

You think any of those facts had something to do with it sucking?

Honestly, blaming the QB rotation on that team's offensive troubles is similar to blaming the paint scheme when you lose the Daytona 500. Maybe we just didn't have a fast enough car.

I looked back and noticed that too. I could have swore when I quoted that there was something in the post about that haha. Oh well. I can see Garcia holding onto the job as well, I was just saying that it also isn't out of the realm of possibility that Shaw wins it too. Some people seem to think there is no way that happens.

                                • All we can do is pray that Garcia lights the world on fire in practice and during the games so that we don't have to experience that mess again. I think Garcia is and will be our starter and Shaw is very capable of coming in in case of injury or in a game that we are winning by a huge margin.
