This is so NOT sop that I hope you are joking. The building blowing yp is not SOP. Pumping saltwater in a reactor and making it unusable in the future and writing off multiple billions of dollars is not sop. You do nit get it apparently.

Don't know who this guy is but he is certainly minimizing the situation compared to what nuclear scientist being interviewed on the networks are saying. Within the last hour, a 6th reactor's cooling system has failed. If any of the six melt down to the point that they break containment, then unfortunately a Chernobyl like incident is possible, although still unlikely. It is currently a level 4 incident on a scale of 1-7 and expected to go to a 5. The sixth reactor failure may have already taken it to a 5. Chernobyl, obviously, was a level 7 incident.

They have have ordered 200,000 people to evacuate and are ready to distribute iodine tablets. This is a very bad situation that could turn catastrophic at any moment.

While experts acknowledged that Japan's nuclear program is very well respected, physicist Ken Bergeron saying that now "we're in uncharted territory."

"The bottom line is that we just don't know what's going to happen in the next couple of days and, frankly, neither do the people who run the system," added Dr. Ira Helfand, a member of the board of Physicians for Social Responsibility.

What we do know, he added, is that Japan's nuclear facilities are "way out of whack."

as i type the third reactor is damaged, meltdown is underway and nobody knows what the long term results will be, or rather, how bad the human toll and that on the land....but from a glorified cook keen for attention you are winning cook

we stopped building nuke reactors while the japanese have much more modern, state of the art stuff...and how much did that help really, we will never know

somehow i doubt the folks in japan will be all that sanquine about nuke power plants....in the 1950s those awful japanese radioactive monsters godzilla rodan mothra etc...all these were myths coming out of the nuking of japan in ww2.....expect some scary shit coming out of japanese cinema soon...

meanwhile...probably not in my lifetime but in the lifetime of most of you youngsters, the united states will likely experience something on the order of what just hit japan

Well, it appears that the strategy of cooling the reactors with sea water appears to be working for the time being.

I know that has to disappoint all the left wing wag nuts that wanted to capitalize on this disaster for the benefit of their narrow political positions.

The truth is that, given the benefit that nuclear energy provides the world (clean, efficient, inexpensive electricity in volumes that are sufficient to serve the world's needs), the risks associated with it are minimal.

Accidents will happen. This event illustrates that when even the most serious and uncontrollable accident happens that the operator had a back up plan in place to allow nearby residents the time to esacape from any pending danger.

That's really wahat we should ask of the builders and operators of these plants.

the earthquake is not the problem with the plants. The tsunami is the problem. It knocked out power which is needed to cool the core and prevent meltdown.

The problem plants are also very old. Newer ones like the ones being built in america are even more earthquake-proof.
