0T: Tiger Woods

  • needs to hang up the clubs.. Started -3 now @ +7. Guy needs to retire.

  • Not yet. He's played once since April. Rust is expected. Assuming he's healthy, next year is the defining year for the balance if his career.
By then he should be as mentally and physically healthy as he's going to be. His swing change will be behind him. Given all of that if he is still a dumpster fire then he's done.
But he's not done yet. Still, I think the chances of him getting back to being a dominate force again are about 50-50. Even 6 months ago I'd have said 75-25.

I'd take Nicklaus in his prime every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Tiger benefited from a lack of true competition to achieve his wins for the most part. Nicklaus fought Palmer, Watson, Trevino, Miller, Weiskoff, Norman, Balesteros, and Player only to name a few.

With today's clubs and balls matched with Nicklaus and these others in their prime, I seriously doubt Woods makes top 5 in the world. Those guys played with clubs and balls that were NOT forgiving of mishits. Today's clubs can make any golfer better. The last generation played with stuff that you had to CONTROL!!

This post is laughable.. Not top 5 in their time seriously? In his prime, Tiger would beat Jack in his prime. Jack has had the better career, no doubt, but pit each other in their primes and Tiger wins whether you choose his 99-00 form or his 2006 form.

Through 14 majors, Tiger had abt 15 more PGA wins in roughly 30 less starts and that is counting the last 3 years when he has sucked. And the competition today is better than it was. Just like in everything there is so much more parity. There have been 10 first time winners on the PGA tour this year. In Jack's day people outside of the top 50 rarely even contended.

And the equipment arguement makes no sense. Number 1- Everybody has access to the same technology as their competitors so that is a wash. Number 2- They lengthed the courses to compensate.

he is not either Jack is still the best ever and lots of people are better than him today. Love all the excuses people are making up from him.

  • Could not have said it better myself! Tiger will win again and break Jacks record unless the injuries keep him from it. He will be back no doubt

    Statistics?

    Facts?

No reason to bring that to the argument, I guess.

Although I have no real opinion on the subject, the statistics are compelling. Definitely not laughable.

Until he gets to 18 there is no debate. That is the standard.
But the equipment argument is inane. EVERYBODY is playing with the same gear today. It's not like Tiger is playing 460cc drives and modern balls and everyone else is hitting balatas and persimmon head drivers.
The guy would have been great in any generation. Of all the players you mentioned, the only one that could sniff Tiger is Nicklaus. Tiger is better than Palmer and the other guys you listed aren't even worth comparing to Woods. I mean Greg Norman??? Give me a break.
Not to mention, as equipment has evolved, so have the golf courses. They are longer and more punitive today than they were back then.

  • Tiger will come back from all of this just like Jordan did from his first retirement. It took a year and then he had the 3 best seasons of his career. Same will happen for Tiger imho.

  • why should he hang it up? he is still rich. if he wants to hob nob around playing some golf that is his business....unless he cannot make cuts. then he could play the nationwide tour

he would still be rich. and he would be playing a game. what would he do in retirement? take up competitive poker? somehow i doubt it.

for all his pitfalls, he is far better off than anyone here will ever experience. no reason to be hatin on the fellow

seems like john daly got away with stuff even worse...some of those loud pants he used to wear were obscene...if that fat drunken chain smoker could make a semi-comeback, tiger might have a tiny chance
