10 Most Valuable Gamecock Football Players

  • From my newest blog post

    http://gamecockpundit.blogspot.com/2012/04/10-most-valuable-gamecock-football.html?m=1

With the NFL draft behind us and several key players from last year's squad moving on to the next level, it's time to look ahead to this season and the 10 players the Gamecocks could not afford to lose.

    1. Connor Shaw
Not only the clear cut starter at the now most important position on the field, but the vocal leader on offense. There is absolutely no one behind him with any experience or the ability to do what he does running and throwing the ball. The reason he's number 1 ahead of Lattimore is based on my belief that after Garcia was dismissed and Lattimore went down, Shaw was the only QB who would have led us to victories over Miss St, Tennessee, Florida, Clemson, and Nebraska.

    2. Marcus Lattimore
Had thoughts of sticking Latt at number 3, based on our depth at RB and the success we had without him, but he's just too valuable. Keeping Shaw healthy is priority #1 for this team and that means limiting his number of running plays. Additionally, opposing defensive coaches have to not only gameplan for Shaw, but Lattimore as well. This puts a ton of pressure on the defensive. Lattimore is the only RB who currently commands this type of attention.

    3. TJ Johnson
The offensive line is looking to replace 2 starters and is littered with underclassmen. Johnson is not only the best (not necessarily the most talented) and most experienced lineman on the team, he is the leader of the group and the only Senior of any signifigance. It could be patch work if he goes down.

    4. Kelcy Quarles
Not Clowney or Taylor? Nope. The loss of Robertson and Ingram on the interior of the defensive line should not be dismissed. The size, speed, and talent that Kelcy brings is matched by no one on the roster at this moment in time. Great defense starts up front and our proven depth on the interior is my biggest concern. The trio of Quarles, Taylor, and Clowney will make up for any lack of talent and depth at the LB spots or the secondary.

    5. Ace Sanders
Teams will load the box to stop the Shaw & Lattimore show, and with the loss of Alshon, a "go-to" receiver must emerge. Ace had a great off season and spring to emerge as the best receiver and clear leader among the bunch. He has more catches and yards (and almost touchdowns) than all the other 2 deep WR's combined!

    6. Victor Hampton
Gone are significant production and experience in Gilmore, Whitlock, and Markett from the Corner position. Starting on the the other side of the field is Akeem Auguste who is coming off an injury and didn't play at all last season. Behind those two, the game experience drops significantly with junior Legree moving from safety and the rest underclassmen.

    7. D.J. Swearinger
The lone senior in a very young, and some what inexperienced, backfield. The clear leader of the bunch from multiple perspectives. He's hard-hitting and sets the complete tone on defense -the emotional leader. He is an anchor of confidence back there for all the young players. He is the captain of that defensive backfield without question. And most of all, he's really good; the guy made multiple game changing/saving plays last year in big games. He's the closest thing to "prime time" we have back there.

    8. Jadaveon Clowney
Another sure fire way to alleviate pressure on your defensive backfield it to have a great pass rush. How much of Clowney's production last year can be attributed to having Devin Taylor and Melvin Ingram on the field at the same time? We're about to find out and I think we will like the results. To Clowney's own admission, he was "just running around out there" making up for his lack of knowledge and experience with pure talent. I'm of the belief that talents like this make their biggest jump from year one to year two. I believe that the trio of Quarles, Taylor, and Clowney will lead the SEC in sacks.

    9. DeVonte Holloman
Basically our third linebacker in the Spur position. He'll be one of three seniors anchoring the middle of defense along side Shaq Wilson and Demario Jeffrey. So why Holloman in the top 10? The other two guys playing along side of him are injury prone and Jeffrey will be a starter at a new position moving from Spur. But most importantly, he is taking the place of one of more productive players we've had on defense over the past two years in Antonio Allen. The Spur position is also Holloman's best position and I really think he will excel in this being his more natural role.

    10. Brandon Shell
Coach Elliot has done a tremendous job taking the achilles heal of the Offense prior to his arrival and making them a very serviceable group, but he's got his work cut out for him again and the key is a red-shirt freshman staring at the all important left tackle position. Elliot will have a load of talent to work with in Shell and he's going to need to be everything we hope he can be. The good news is that Shaw isn't going to sit in the pocket for hours and throw it all over the field, but we need an effective passing game for this offense to fully click.

Could make a case for any of these guys (honorable mentions): Devin Taylor, Justice Cunningham, A.J. Cann, Mike Matulis, D.L. Moore

Then I go in and hand it to ML and he runs behind that line. If we end up with the best o line and best d line in the SEC we win the SEC.

  • I think you have to move Clowney up much higher, he'll bring loads of addition attention to our program and a sense of legitimacy. I understand this type of player impact may be outside your guidelines, but I think you should consider incorporating it.

    great post

agree with just about all of it

LT, hell both tackle positions will be key as we'll rely on major youth....talented, but a ton of inexperience. It needs to come together exceptionally quick.

Would have War daddy a little higher. Dude is a game changer that should break out big time this year as you also stated.

staying healthy at DT is a big key as well

There was too much inexperience and lack of depth at other key positions to do so. DE is our most talented and deepest position on Defense.
