2012 O-Line

  • Which offensive linemen project to get early playing time next year? I know its early and it all depends on how well they respond to the playbook/speed of the game/etc. Based on pure ability, who ya got?

I've watched the highlights of a couple of the prospects and the one I'm most excited about is Cody Waldrop. Based on what I saw, he either pancake blocked someone, flung someone to the ground, or knocked someone down then fell on top of them until the whistle blew. He may or may not factor in to play next year but his highlights got me excited about the way he plays. Based on what we're seeing this year with the line and who will be graduating, one would think a freshman or two would need to play. Why not, Waldrop? I'll hang up and listen.

  • As of today, here is how I see the line going into next year.

LT: Mike Matulis (So), Brock Stadnik (Fr)
LG: AJ Cann (rSo), Will Sport (rFr)
C: TJ Johnson (rSr), Travis Ford (rJr)
RG: Ronald Patrick (Jr) or Kyle Harris (So)
RT: Brandon Shell (rFr), Cody Gibson (rSo)

    agree with this.

although, i could also see a scenario with Harris backing up both guard spots

just a gut feeling, but i think Waldrop will push for a backup guard spot, as well

  • Definitely gonna see some Shell.

    Pretty accurate.

I think Nunn going down hurt us this year, but I think it REALLY HELP US next year because Matulis is getting invaluable experience playing this season in the best conference.

I can also see Waldrop being a backup but only used in emergency situations to perserve his redshirt.

The only position I am worried about is center. When Johnson graduates after 2012, I dont know who we will move to his spot.

  • We will be better at every position on the OL next season. TJ and Cann will start and improve this winter or spring. Rok is great and could be a 10 year starter at OG in the NFL but he doesn't have the feet for LT. I don't think it's a reach to say Matulus or Standik will be an upgrade at LT. TC is a guy that gives his all but I think we will have a talent upgrade at RG also. Guys like Matulis and Gibson will get better.

I think we could see this

    LT Matulis / Standik
    LG Cann / Patrick
    C TJ/ Patrick
RG Patrick or Gibson / Harris
    RT Shell / Gibson

I think Patrick will fight for the RG spot and could back up C as well. Gibson seems to be a decent run blocker but gets lost with speed outside. Maybe he plays RG and plays OT if injuries happen. This makes it possible to RS every FR except B Standik and puts us in the position to do that with everyone starting the following year.

  • Is Nunn done for good or are they still reviewing to see if he gets a medical redshirt?

I believe they are going to apply for a hardship 6th year for Nunn.
