A question for golfers.....Tiger Woods got real upset when the

  • person yelled out when he was in the middle of his swing. I understand that golfing is more of a gentlemens game. But with that being said I have played golf for many years and I hear all kinds of things when I am playing....It is part of the game. All other sports learn to play when there is distractions such as basketball when the player is trying to sink the winning FTs. Does everyone shut up for this to take place? The kicker in football trying to kick the winning FG. Does everyone sit quietly? I really think Tiger is searching for reasons to blame his lack of recent success rather than looking at himself.....JMHO

  • In other sports, there is constant noise and is part of the game. Not so in golf. A sudden noise during the swing is upsetting to most all golfers.

    Hondocock

  • The person who yelled out should be removed from the grounds. No place in golf for that.

However, his fans have brought many distasteful things to the sport of Golf. Personally I don't care for him or his fans so neither one of them have anything to complain about.

You let in rift raft and this is what you get. But it is wrong to do it. So live with it Tiger...

There is noise at these other venues but Tiger does not practice nor play in a noiseless world. There is constantly planes overhead, people screaming and yelling on other holes and he adjusts to those noises.

I'm reminded of a round I was playing a few years ago against my eight year old niece over at Frankie's Fun Park - I was putting for par for the victory when out of the blue a bunch of teenagers became rowdy and disruptive with their giggling - I became so flustered I ended up with a double boggy. Darn those kids.

It's a little different when it's "regular" noises and when someone yells from close by in the middle of your backswing. I agree they should be removed from the grounds.

I think it would be awesome for the PGA to have 1 tournament a year where there were bleachers on every hole and people could yell and be rowdy like at a football game.

  • I really hate where golf fans are taking spectacular viewing. It's getting annoying and hurting the game of golf.

    TaylorsCock

  • I think everydamnbody that yells "get in the hole" should immediately be beaten, ejected and banned for life..... then shot to death.

Who are "his" fans? The fans that actually made golf a little cooler or increased purses exponentially? Or the fans that now encroach on the grounds of one few remaining "pure" elitist territories? Your right.. now fans new to the sport dont know the eticate associated with golf and are doing all manner of inappropriate crap.

  • I wish people who don't play golf, or don't respect the game would keep their opinions to themselves when it comes to golf. Its pretty simple, the rules are there, the gentlemen's rules are there. If you disagree just go home and shut up. Golf is not asking for anyone's opinion. It's a well established game and quite frankly I dont think any golfer cares what newbies think. If you yell in my backswing, Im re-teeing and if you do it more than once, expect a 2 iron stinger to be buzzing you. And don't complain when i hit you either.

  • not just just golf - absolute silence when someone is serving in tennis is also the norm. McEnroe used to go ballistic if someone MOVED too much in his line of site while he was serving.

  • Some sports require a great deal more focus/concentration than others. The Golf swing, when the tennis player hits his serve, the pool player in a tournament...the rules of sportsmanship should apply to these situations. There's a reason the person yelling out isn't the person playing the game...think about it.

  • 86cocky - I had an 18 page reply to your post ready, but I've been working in my yard and had WAY to much liquid on an empty stomach. Yours is a good and fair question. Like him or hate him, Tiger Woods is really struggling right now. That's true. By the way, he leads the entire PGA in greens hit in regulation, the most humbling statistic in golf.

I side with Tiger on this. There is no place in golf for people (stupid people) yelling in someone's backswing. If that idiot wants to be a part of the tournament, then go practice and try to qualify. Good luck. He's a fan. Shut up and watch the best in the world do what you wish you could do.

All sports at the championship level require immense concentration although it may not look like it. There's a lot more going on than most of us realize. Golf is an extremely precise endeavor. Ninety percent of it is muscle memory but that other 10% makes the difference. Jack Nicklaus said he never tried to hit a straight shot. He's always working it one way or the other. I've seen Sam Snead hit some shots in the practice round at Augusta National that were really amazing but exactly what he planned. Saw Nick Faldo hit one on no. 11 at Augusta that went 180 yards two feet off the ground, hooked and ended up 10 feet from the pin. He looked at the roaring gallery and said "What?". None of those would probably have happened if some wannabe had yelled during their swing.

So, I think golf fans should shut up until the shot is over and enjoy the show. JMHO.

I seriously don't believe that it is harder to hit a stationary ball than one coming from off a pitching mound and you have little idea what pitch/movement/velocity is coming, there's a reason success in baseball is defined at 30%. And people scream like crazy in important baseball games.
That's not saying golf isn't an incredibly hard sport, it is. But the level of concentration that it takes to play is not why fans don't scream. Like a lot of individual vs team sports, a different etiquette has grown up around it. And with that, fans that attend those sports should recognize that and respect it.

I will address "his Fans". You really never heard people "Yell out, "get in the hole" or other cries until Tiger arrived. By doing the yelling and showing your butts you are really showing your ignorance and disrespect for the game of golf. I make no apologies for the sport of Golf and how one should conduct themselves on the golf course.

Tiger, with his cursing, kicking clubs, refusal to interview after a bad round, plus his private life which dishonors all that the game teaches is not a good example of some "poor little kid"
that is being treated unfairly by whites. He is a great golfer but a hollow person.

I fully expect him to win again and win big, but at what price will the game of golf pay for his triumphs. As far as the fans he has brought to the game, the economy has them not playing the game as golf rounds played has actually decreased in the last few years.

You're blaming Tiger because some likely drunken redneck fan yelled during his backswing? I'm not taking up for Tiger, but you seem to be going a bit over the top.

I can understand your statement and I will not go on one of my rants about Tiger.......I do not like the way the media treats this man after what he has done to not only himself and his family but even to golf itself....Tiger will never be half the man Jack is and that is a fact...I also think that Tigers career is all but washed up. He may win a few more tournys but will fade quietly into the night much like the Clemson Baseball team did today.....

Let's not pretend Tiger is the only person who gets upset about this. But it does happen to him more with the crowds who follow him. I've also seen numerous pros complain about having to play in front of Tiger because of how the crowds are always moving around to get ahead of him. You should mention those guys too since that's not even a sharp noise just some walking and rustling around.

Anyway - for non-golfers - imagine taking a math test back in the day when the room is quiet and you're concentraiting and your head is filled with numbers...and then someone comes and shouts next to you. My guess is you'd probably lose whatever you had in your head. Same with shouting in the back swing - breaks the concentration and kills the shot.

I need to play with Mr Nice Guy - we'd get along great

    MCC

  • Bottom line is Tigers crowds are much more crazy, drunk, and enthusiastic. So, not to mention probably less "golferlike" Meaning being its probably alot of dudes that dont care about what he did in his personal life, therefore being loud drunk and obnoxious...or fun whichever way you want to take it. I mean Phil and Bubba looked PISSED out there but Tiger is obviously more in the microscope. Being able to win today after all that just shows his mental toughness may still be there, and his game MAY be back. Im not gonna sit here and say "Tigers back!" but it was a very big step in that direction. Be it he is no Jack off the course it is golf...most of them are perfect family men. Look at football and bball players...hell MLB players and none are as ridiculed as so.

If you yell out during someone's swing at a golf event, you're pretty much an idiot.
But let's not pretend golf is harder sport or takes more concentration to play than baseball.

In baseball u get 3 strikes.
If u hit it foul u get another chance.
If the catcher drops it on strike 3 u have a chance to get on base. (Slim chance but a chance)
Fielder makes error u get on base.
Many ways to get on base.
Hit a sac fly its a successful AB
Bunt a runner over its a successful AB.

U make 3 bad swings in baseball u strike out and can forget about it. You make a bad swing in golf, you have to go hit ur next shot.

Go 1-5 with a Dble and two RBI and you've had a good game.

I'm not denying how hard baseball is, one of the toughest sports without a doubt. But it doesn't take near the concentration that golf requires. Every single shot matters and there is no one out there that you can depend on to bail you out. There are the rare good bounces on a bad shot but they don't come close to the number of bad breaks on good shots.

And people comparing themselves playing at joes public links and not being bothered to professionals playing is like comparing yourself in a church league softball game and the guys on Sunday night baseball.
