ACC Rumor

  • Agree that it's wishful thinking. I can't imagine a single advantage that the ACC would hold for Penn State. As for Notre Dame, they can get what they want without having to join a conference.

N.C. State would be a nice pickup for the SEC. But would they ever separate themselves from the rest of Tobacco Road, with whom they have some very intense basketball rivalries?

Not with the current leadership or with the nostalgic, moneyed donors. Still to basketball centric. The younger grads and fans would jump for the SEC. Not the old timers who still pull the strings of power and money.

  • Stopped reading when I saw the part about Penn State going to the ACC. I laughed out loud. Penn State has its own problems right now, but rats don't crawl on to a sinking ship.

The Big 12 has been and will continue to wait for a decision from Notre Dame. It will take them time to put together the egos of Notre Dame and Texas, but it's going to be nice for them when it gets done. And it will. And Florida State will jump in right away. If somehow the Big 12 fails to land Notre Dame, I think they would have more interest in a Georgia Tech or even Miami before they would fart on Clemson. Clemson is entirely without value in conference negotiations.

Clemson will get caught holding the ACC bag, and karma will have its pound of flesh for them stabbing us in the back in the early 70s. While the ACC may survive, and might even get a seat at the big boy table, its institutions will fall farther and farther behind every year in the money race. And money makes the world go round. The worm has turned, and even though Clemson can brag right now about all the wins they put up before WWII, that won't last another lifetime. I see this thing evening up, even to the point where we pass them in overall record, sometime in the next 50 years or so. I hope I can live that long.

Penn State would never leave the Big Ten, especially for the ACC.

This. B1G tv contract pays out over $25mil to the member schools...ACC not even close with 2 more teams than the B1G after the cuse and Pitt join.

I think the idea would be to renegotiate again and probably do a network, just spitballing.

This is your endgame hope if you are acc. If they pulled it off they'd probably be in as good a position as anyone else with tv.

Not that I think it is likely.

But if penn state is making a decision that isn't based on current money and instead based solely on geography, history and tradition they'd probably prefer to be in league with Pitt, Syracuse, and Maryland on the east coast as opposed to big 10 in the Midwest.

The comparison isn't so much michigan or wake forest. If comparing strength then fsu, Miami, va tech, Clemson aren't so bad. And northwestern, minnesota, Indiana, aren't really blowing anyone away either.

I personally think the short term is good for USC either way, but I think Clemson loses in long run playing outside their footprint in big 12.
