AD and Tanner Thoughts

  • I don't post often but all the discussion on the pro's and con's of Coach Tanner potentially being out next Athletic Director provoked some thinking.

I think the ideal situation would be to hire an experienced (preferably in the SEC or in a comparable league) with the understanding that Tanner would have an active role in the staff perhaps in fundraising and overseeing Olympic sports.

This would allow Tanner to get additional experience, play to his current strengths, and not alienate him nor his substantial supporters.

Then 5-7 years down the road, Tanner is fully qualified, and still relatively young among Athletic Directors.

I could be totally off base, and this assumes that Tanner would be amenable to the idea. But it seems to at least be a way forward with minimal internal strife.

  • Respectfully disagree. Tanner can do the job and as far as I am concerned it should be his. he is Smart, has integrity, trust and love of alumni.... It is the perfect time for it and elevate Coach Holbrook to head coach of baseball.

  • Who says that a new AD would want to step down in 5 to 7 years? And who is the "internal strife" among? Some fans? No matter who you hire some people are going to be disappointed. Listen, Ray Tanner is a winner. The guy understands what it takes to win championships in the SEC and on the national stage. He manages a thirty man roster with 11.5 scholarships. He is one of the few baseball coaches to turn a profit in the entire country. Ray Tanner is NOT some idiot who would be lost as AD which I feel like some people are insinuating. Ray will do whatever it takes to be successful, such as surrounding himself with the best people, just look at his coaching staff for an example. Being a major college AD is not an easy job but some of you are acting like it is an impossible job to do unless you have twenty years of experience or something...

I'm not saying he can or cannot do the job. Simply proposing a way forward that mitigates the risks IF he's not quite ready for the job.

I agree that he's smart, has integrity, and a love for the University. However, I disagree that those should be the only required qualifications for the job.

  • Hiring is an inexact science. Given that, I'd rather gamble on Ray, a proven winner who already has the respect of the entire athletic dept IF he wants the job.

  • He's ready now, and there's no need to make him wait another 5-10 years. Chances are NC State could come calling by then.
This is the most seamless transition imaginable, to a guy who knows and understands the inner-workings of our athletics department better than any outsider.

Unlike breaking in an "experienced" AD who didn't get big-time SEC football right away (see Hyman), Ray has been on this campus for 15 years. He gets it now!

Give the man the job he desires, promote Holbrook to the job he has earned....and we will be in great shape from a leadership standpoint for a long time.

Did I mention, he won't bail for extra $$$ from another school??

  • Egin, I agree. He's ready now.

  • I think the right thing to do is to give it to Tanner if he wants it. (We would be foolish to tell him no!) Then you surround him with the right people. You hire people that their strengths, are Tanner's weaknesses.

I see both sides to everyone's argument. Glad I don't have to make the decision!

You've probably not done much hiring in your day and that's perfectly fine. That being said, you don't hire a head man and put stipulations like that on him.
