Adam Mathews

  • Yeah I saw where he put on twitter that he's getting a lot of hate but his followers keep going up. At least he's got a sense of humor about it it seems

so just b/c the team is doing well and winning we can't discuss players/plays that didn't/aren't going well. It's all gotta be "attaboys", unicorns and rainbows? Just like when we lose people post positives, when we win, people post negatives. This is a Gamecocks recruiting and discussion board and there is nothing wrong with that.

  • I don't agree with moving Vergason up. I love having him in the 9 hole -- he is good at getting on base in front of Pakake, Marzilli, and Walker.

I wouldn't hate seeing our DH bat 5, Greiner 6, Matthews 7, English 8, and Vergason 9. Let TE and Vergason get on base and set the plate for our clutch hitters at the top of the order.

But no way do you bench Matthews at this point. Senior leadership matters -- it's why others teams continue to crack and we stay loose. The way baseball tends to work, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Matthews ends up with a big hit to help us win a game before this thing is over.

And, he had the game winning run yesterday by walking it in. We would not be in the CWS finals without him.

He deserves better than some of you.

    Typical football fans.

Your in the CWS, your facing the best pitchers in the country. How do you think our opponents batting avg's are against us.

Pathetic thread, just pathetic. He was the regional MVP, he was the MVP of the clempsun series. He made a diving catch last night that saved a run, then the game winning RBI.

Steve....Do you think Matthews would be happy with his batting performance in the CWS?

Once again I did not say he should be removed from the lineup but should be moved down in the batting order. I said his fielding and leadership have been good but you chose to ignore the positives I mentioned.

Obviously he would not be happy with his batting performance. He was our best player in the regional, he is one the few of our guys with pop, he is the second fastest player on the team. he has made some good defensive plays and we don't have anyone better. I see nothing wrong with criticism, I just find it humorous that some people seem to go out of their way to point out stuff that is as obvious as the nose on their face just so they can say, "I'm objective, I'm not a rah rah guy". Whatever.

I wasn't talking to you, per say. I know you said some positive things, I was posting as to the overall mood of this thread. This subject has, obviously, been beaten into submission over, and over, and over, and over again. Of course he knows he is struggling. He has had a terrible year at times. Like I said, though, in the CWS, we are facing the best pitchers in the country, and we are going to see out guys strike out some, it happens.

He has also been sensational defensively. He has hit a home run to win a game 1-0, he was the regional MVP. He, also made a fantastic diving catch last night to save a run, and had the winning RBI. Whenever he strikes out, this place lights up with people calling for his benching, every time. RIght after he won the game for us is not the time, out of all the bad times, to call a player out.

These are the final 3 games of his career here, and I think he has been scrutinized and beaten up pretty well for 3 careers. I guess I thought we could lay off of a team captain, and a team leader for the final 3 games of a career which includes 3 consecutive trips to the national title game.

I don't have a problem with people talking about tweaking the lineup, or whatever. Or, even complaining about bunting. I've said before that we have every right to question the coaches, I just don't know how smart we are going to look for doing so, after everything is said and done.

  • Fair enough...I for one hope he lights up Zona and is the finals MVP...I would love nothing more than a guy struggling overcomes it and wins us the whole thing and leaves and the highest of high notes...

    KAHWood

  • He is struggling right now, but Tanner must feel he is still our best option in right field and at the number 5 hole. I feel pretty good having faith in his judgement.

After what he did to Clemson, he can bat .100 and I would still want him in the line up every day. Tiger Killer and a great Gamecock.

Keep swinging Adam; the hits will come in the final series.

No some of us want to have a good discussion. There is nothing wrong with having a discussion about things that could improve. It all depends on how you discuss these improvements. Do you say it with venom or say it because some of us have played the game before and have a little insight into where things stand.....

I played football, basketball and baseball before I got hurt so I have a little insight on things that's all.

  • Matthews' slump started again when he was moved to the cleanup spot after the Clemson games in the regional. I think perhaps he started putting too much pressure on himself at that point.....started trying to yank everything outta the park.

What about the 6 runners he left on base last night?

Don't care about the six he left stranded - just the one he forced in via walk in the 7th to win the game!

  • I didn't read all the comments in this thread because I get too frustrated with the rudeness and ignorance of some members here. If you can't tell me who on our roster will definitely give us a better combination of offense, defense, and experience than Adam Matthews, the shut up. Sure he has struggled in Omaha. He has struggled a bit all year. Why rip him now, after all the blood, sweat, and tears he's put into Gamecock baseball?

Some of yall wont be so critical if matthews blasts one to win this thing for us.

I believe you're correct. Similarly, QBs who throw TD passes are criticized less often than QBs who throw interceptions.

    Spurrier...I appreciate him plenty
