Alshon slipped for 1 reason and 1 reason only...

  • losing 25 lbs to run forty essentially invalidates the time... all of his film shows him playing at 240, he should have run at 240. they have zero idea what they are going to get. he can run a 4.5 now and thats great, but now the question is, is he physically the same kid we see on film? he got really bad advice...

by the way corey miller probably just got his @$$ banned from pro day next year.

  • He had a slight case of verbal salmonella. Didn't use discretion in trying to entertain.

  • I don't think it's one reason. Letting other receivers steal the pub at the draft didn't help.

  • I first thought you were going to say because he didn't come back. I agree with you completely. AJ dropping all that weight leads to more questions... Will he maintain that weight throughout his pro career or will he go back to his normal playing weight? He is a completely different player at this weight than anything he has on film. Slipping like this may be the best motivation for AJ going forward.

  • Not doing any of the drills at the combine probably didn't help either.

I do think some team will get a high value pick with him.

I don't think losing that much weight helped his cause any but you are incorrect in my humble opinion. He dropped like a rock because he did not participate in any of the skill sessions at the combine.

  • If he was going to lose the lbs, he should have come back as a Sr. and played at that weight. Typical advise from a self serving agent.

  • I cannot believe that no one mentioned the fact that the Quarterback play was horrible from Garcia, Conner is our man but came on late. Alshon cannot throw and catch the ball. They all know that Alshon will have a better career then any of those receivers. He has no character issues and have the best hands Spurrier ever had out of a receiver. This is a quote from Spurrier himself and that is saying alot. We will come back to this a year from now.

I guy from an option offense will be picked ahead of him. Scouts put on film and look for what you do when the pass doesn't come your way. I'd take Jeffrey over him, but I bet there were things on film that went against him.

  • It seems that everyone wants to blame anyone but Alshon. Blame the QB, the agent, the offense, the coach, but it's not the player.

I think the weight fluctuations hurt him. He put on a few pounds before his junior year and then lost too many before his pro day. He is at his best playing at the weight played as a sophomore, and with the weight fluctations, the scouts were not sure what type of receiver they would be getting. Plus, the weight gain prior to his junior year showed (in their minds) a player that lacks discipline.

Had he maintained his weight from his sophomore year all the way through to his pro day, I think he goes in the first round.

    totally agree.

Or played this year at 215. Best WR in the draft and will have the most productive career of this years WR's.

  • What did Corey Miller do?

The lack of production had everything to do with Garcia losing any semblance of accuracy this year. The year before, Garcia would just throw it up to a triple-covered Alshon when under duress, and Alshon won more than half those balls. Then, Nunn went down, and we started getting sacked at an astounding rate.

Then, when Shaw came in, he was cautious with the ball, which helped us a lot. That said, he had to adjust to what is open in the SEC vs what is open in high school. Zone defense flummoxed him at first, because every where he looked, there was someone just close enough to make him hesitate.

When Shaw adjusted by the klimpson and nebraska games, lo and behold, there is the 'old Alshon' again. Its funny how it worked out like that.

  • Or maybe he can play for money at whatever weight he is going to play at in the NFL as a second round pick.

He wasn't going in the top 10 ever. He would be playing for his free agent contract anyway. Might as well get paid and get it over with.

So you're saying that the agent knowingly gave him bad advice because he's self serving? Not sure how the self serving agent betters his lot in life by giving his client bad advice that would cause his stock to drop and thus net them both less money???

  • I don't think the original post makes much sense. I understand that they don't have any film on him at 215 but, if I follow the logic, in the face of the biggest concern being his weight/body type/work ethic the appropriate response would be for him to do nothing and stay exactly the same? I'd think that shedding the weight would be the first order of business (and obviously it was). He could have alieviated the concerns over his strength and abilityat 215 by performing at the combine along side the other WRs. I don't agree with that decision but I don't see how losing weight and getting faster was a bad thing before the draft.

This. I think most of you guys are right in connecting the dots. Losing weight is not a bad thing, but losing weight and then not participating at the combine was dumb - as JC and others have said. It just opens up too many questions and makes it easy for teams to pass...why didn't he participate, why did it take him until the combine to get in shape - why didn't he do that in school, etc, etc. They just worry they might get a guy with oodles of talent who might be unpredictable and lazy and will bust. We all know he'll be great but the NFL guys are seeing too much risk.
