Anybody on here ever ruptured their achilles?

  • My brother ruptured his achilles yesterday. He is a blue collar guy, and is going to be in a world of hurt. He does construction at a nuclear plant, and has kids. What is his rehab time, and how is he going to be afterwards?

  • August 2011 for me....
    He will require surgery
Six weeks in a cast after surgery
Six weeks in a walking boot
    Rehab...
And dont think you will be able to do much with the walking boot on.
Looking at 12 weeks before putting a regular shoe or boot on.

Too this day I am still not running but I am walking normal. Will only run if I have to.

  • I ruptured mine in 2004 and was in a cast for 10 weeks no walking boot after that. It took me five years to get my calf muscle back to anywhere near where it was. I was 39 at the time.

Depending on aggressiveness of orthopod and distal aspect of the tear this pretty correct. Walking boot non weight bearing for 6, the. Walking boot progressive weight bearing for another 4. At 10 weeks out of boot and progress strength, motion, function. Swelling and pain for about 6 months

  • Thanks, ya'll!

This really sux. I don't know what he is going to do.

FWIW, the doctor said he is afraid his achilles has separated from the bone. Is this worse, better, the same?

  • My brother ruptured his also. It's a long recovery process. His ruptured completely and they had to cut way up his leg to bring it back down to re-attach.

One of the best places to get details on the severity is on youtube. They have great videos on it and explains the 3 different types; at the bone (bottom of the foot), in the middle and at the lower part of the calf muscle.

Want hurt to get an MRI. This will add to the bill though but will give the better answer than an x-ray.

Hopefully your brother has a STD plan with his employer or outside of work. These pricks are a pain as well.
