Anyone that has been to Columbia, MO before...

  • Is the place just that bad? Saw it on Saturday and literally half the baseball team was tweeting how they were so ready to get back to the real Columbia and such. Then on The Roost tonite, the baseball trainer (didn't catch his name) started talking about it. Said it was much different then what he was expecting. I was putting the players rants on it just being a cold miserable double header but maybe the place really does suck. Guess we will learn soon enough when we start making the trip every other year for football. Anyone have any actual stories about the place? Bad weather or just a strange area?

  • I have visited 10-12 times on business.

Nice, mid-sized college town. Very nice Midwestern folks who love MIZZOU.

Playing baseball in cold, overcast, wet weather is not going to give a great impression.

I spend four (4) years in KC going to school. It can be miserably cold in the midwest. I would not want to be playing baseball in March there.

Was watching Going Amish this past weekend and it appears that a lot of Amish defector /refugees make their home there.

  • UGA fans appeared to have fun based on posts last football season.

  • A few friends and myself will be going for this years football game, but we'll be staying in St. Louis and making the 2 hour drive to and from the game on gameday. I couldn't get a decent hotel in Columbia, MO when I was booking so we figured it must not be worth a damn.

  • I live in St. Louis and Columbia is ok - the Midwest is strange in that their are some big gaps between the major cities. There is nothing much on I-55 between
St.. Louis and Chicago - except for Springfield, Ill.; there is nothing much between St. Louis and Kansas City except Columbia/Jefferson City - and none are huge.

  • My son and I are flying into KC on the Thursday before the mizzou game to eat the KC bbq joints and driving over and back on saturday fly home sunday. Dont know how much I will see as we plan to really explore the KC bbq scene and my son is a train nut so we going to some museum that is in the KC about trains. He actually wants to ride up to omaha for a train museum in that area.

  • I went to that train museum in Omaha in 2002. If you son loves trains that is a fantastic museum for it.

Not sure what you consider to be worth a damn. Obviously, that varies from person to person.

Columbia is not Atlanta, so if you are looking for major hotels like a full Marriott or Hilton, you will not find them. They have many decent places that are not upscale, such as Holiday Inn Express, Hampton Inn and so on.

From a things to do standpoint, it probably compares to Florence or Spartanburg, SC. There are a fair number of decent restaurants, but nothing real high end.

If you wish to see a football game in a mid-sized college town, you might enjoy it. If you are looking for tons to do, then it might not be the place for you.

True, but a very small portion of the population are ex-Amish.

Can you compare the college town vibe in Columbia, Mo. to Athens or Gainesville -- both really neat places on a fall weekend?
