Baylor, and the Greiner situation with women's BBall

  • For any that haven't heard about the situation there. Baylor's women's bball coaches made 1000's, literally, of impermissible phone calls and texts to Greiner during the recruiting process. When they started getting investigated for it, they just said 'ok, you got us', and imposed some sanctions. The head coach cannot be on the road recruiting the whole year, and stuff like that.

How do ya'll feel about someone purposefully breaking the rules for something they knew would be completely worth it in the end. They knew that Greiner boy would bring their women's team a nat title, so it was completely worth it. It was blatant and I do not feel good about the penalties the NCAA gave them.

They intentionally broke the rules, and happily accepted the sanctions. They broke the rules knowing the pay off would be worth it.

It doesn't sit right with me.

How do ya'll feel about it.

  • I agree with ya.

  • I'm more curious as to how they got away with letting a man on a women's team. I truly believe she would be proven to be a man by the Olympic gender test. Or whatever that is.

  • Clemson does this every year. They self report and that's that.

  • Didn't realize the NCAA had rules for inter-mural sports. Interesting

  • I'm more bothered by the fact that a dude is allowed to play women's basketball.

  • It's the same thing Kiffen was doing at Tennessee. So you're on probation, take a coach off the road for a month, and lose a scholarship or two for some minor violations? If you get the superstar player it works out to your advantage.

  • I'm sure the respect she lost from this in the coaches circle will carry some weight as well. That and hopefully the NCAA will keep a close eye on them for years to come which will haunt them as well. Who remembers who won the WBB title from 3 years and beyond anyway?

  • The NCAA is useless... no other way to describe it other than that.. Rules are in place for things like this but until an example is made of someone it will continue

  • risk vs reward. Just like in any game you have the abilities to break the rules and hope that you get by with it, even though you have full knowledge of the penalties.

IMO- the ncaa needs to be stiffer on things in general.

Agree, but punish the coaches and schools, not the students. As much money as the coaches make I see no reason why the NCAA can't levy heavy fines against them for just such a thing. Taking away schollies only hurts those not involved.

  • How do you know it was intentional? Perhaps they misunderstood the rules.

  • She dunks in every warm up. Is that not a technical foul? I posted this to espn and linked an article saying the same thing from 2010 and It was erased because ESPN is...ESPN. I've seen it in high school and college. What happened to equal gender rights? Wouldn't title nine say they play under the same rules? Explanation?

The men's team did it too. They got into trouble for the same things at the same time. I think as an institution, Baylor said 'screw the rules, we have got to get our school some notoriety", and they did.

They knew the rules, EVERY coach knows you cannot call and text a recruit hundreds of times a day.

I agree. The problem is that with almost any punishment, the kids end up paying just as big a price. And, most of the kids that end up suffering are completely innocent.

I say the NCAA needs to start suspending coaches. Lay out a list of infractions, and how long a coach is suspended for each one. This model has its problems as well. I don't know a perfect solution.

I have said this and gotten blasted. I think Greiner is probably a hermaphrodite. Or, just a straight up dude.
