I think mid 20s on up is considered pretty dang strong. most linemen will be able to do 20+. OL from Mich put up like 41 or something.

I would think linemen need to do 30+. Chris Hope did about 28 and Jay Cutler hit it I believe 24 times.

thanks. man thats a lot of weight. that nfl site is terribly slow. have you seen how many trent richardson put up?

    LondonCock

  • They should just increase the weight to 275 for linemen and LBs. Much better guage of strength.

  • I agree I was thinking that this weekend - once you get up around 20+ reps, its not even a direct correlation between their max strength....its an endurance thing and you get bigtime lactic acid buildup....its pretty contrary to strength training that these guys typically do and a guy who is stronger could do worse than someone who was specifically training for high reps lower weights.

Thats the whole point. They want to see who has the most strength and endurance not just the most strength. Football is a game of strength and endurance. It's the same reason Fitz never had our guys do a one rep max.

I was reading an article this weekend that it was pretty hotly debated in the NFL on whether or not they should be doing it that way, for just this reason we are talking about. Seems there are some teams that want higher weights because they want a true strength test, whereas alot of people like the fact that its a combination of both.

Yeah but 225 for these gigantic guys is not very much. I'm just a regular dude and I do 225 for 17. For WRs and DBs its fine.

i call BS on this.........a regular dude can not do 17 reps...Maybe you can in fact do 17 reps, but you are in the gym and have been in the gym for quite some time. So lets not make it sound like repping 225 out is as easy as hitting a few key strokes on the computer to impress others.

It's not BS, and yes, it is above average for those reps. But the guys who play on the lines and at LB are genetic freaks of nature. 225 to them is nothing.

What's your opinion on them bouncing the weights off of their chest?

but you make it sound like a "regular dude" can do at least 17 reps of 225lbs. by your standards and that is false.

AND considering how far off your "regular dude" standards are......I call BS that you can do 17 reps yourself.

do they do that? I guess rules require a touch and thats all so they are going to do whatever it takes. powerlifting competitions they make you pause at the bottom/no bouncing...so that would be another way to do it but I think you start getting too complicated there with too many rules/judging/etc...

there is nothing inherently wrong with bouncing it if everyone is playing by the same rules I guess.

I am a regular dude who enjoys weight lifting. 6'2" 220 and 25 years old. I do not consider myself a superior athlete or anything like that, maybe just a little stronger than most. That's what I mean by regular dude.

Cool....sounds like your closer to a superior athlete than regular dude. Im 5'10, 195lbs and I workout as well. I can get 12 reps of 225llbs on a good day, 10-11 on an average day.

Should arm length factor into the NFL combine stats??? I am short and have a thick chest...the weight does not travel as far with me as on a taller athlete. Does that matter?

so your 1 rep max is prolly over 300 then? that prolly puts you in the top 1% or so...not regular dude lol though of course not NFL athlete level.

You and I are basically of equal strength, so you can stop calling BS now! The difference is a few inches and a few pounds.

Is arm-length considered...same as wingspan right? I think it's important to consider it for OL, DL and WRs so that they can create separation, reach for jump balls, etc. On bench it affects guys I'm sure, but that's why you just spread your grip out.

Deal....while i am no athlete, I dont think a regular dude could get 225lbs twice......however i think it is much much tougher (or more impressive) for someone with longer arms to do the same weight or reps.

Probably, but weight lifting is totally different than being fast and freakish. Anyone who trains long enough can bench 300, just a matter of time.

The same cannot be said for running a 4.6 forty or having a 40 inch vertical jump. Those are just God-given abilities.

yeah I am on my way back to 300. hopefully.
