Besides South Carolina, what other teams evaluate high school

  • talent the best? I am not talking about 4 or 5 stars, I am talking about what schools do the most with the least. What team finds passed over talent? Looking at three star's and lower, what school does the best job.

    IMHO, Viginia Tech seems to find hidden gems a bunch. Penn St. used to do it also.

    who is the worst talent evaluators?

    my vote is for Miami - how can you suck for so long in that talent rich state.

  • The team that does the least with the most is Texas, followed by Miami. SoCal and FSU, considering they lose to almost every good team they play, are right there as well.

    Kansas St does a great job with 2*'s and JUCO's. Oregon St gets literally mostly 2* guys every year, and they have pretty good teams. Our coaches do about as good a job as anyone. The overall athleticism and team speed we have is up there with anyone in the country. We do more with less along the DL, by far, than any other team in the country.

    some on this board do not think USC recruits well or hard or whatever, I think we do very well with 3 stars.

    I was just asking for other schools than USC, but you can put USC in your worst category if you would like.

  • Boise obviously does a great job a getting "under the radar" recruits but people should realize that Boise has built their program by going after the best players out West in places like California that cannot qualify for PAC 12 football. It would be the equivalent of the SEC raising its standards across the board and a team like Louisville getting players that can't qualify for the SEC (hmmm.... they already seem to do this to a certain extent).

    Louisville and West Virginia are good examples but they also follow the formula of getting recruits that cannot qualify for SEC schools. However, they have gotten some guys that the SEC ignored so you have to give them props for that.

    Virginia Tech did it for years but outsiders are really starting to recruit that state now. Especially for next year. The state of Virginia seems like it is loaded in 2013.

    Michigan State and Wisconsin have done pretty good too with average recruiting classes.

  • Oregon, up until two years ago, and West Virginia. They have mostly lived off of 2 and 3 stars.

    thats been the biggest difference for us the last 3 years

    big time play makers who win games

    (marcus-uga '10; alshon-miss state '11; jc-tennessee '12; etc etc etc)

    yes we absolutely have increased our overall talent level across the board

    and the collective team unity and hard work have been essential components as well

    and that is a credit to our coaches for choosing the right players and developing them well

    but lets be honest; its not just "making great evaluations" that's winning us games

    its signing prime time players (that anyone and their brother could and did "evaluate" properly)

    --

    also oregon and west virginia do absurd amounts of damage to the opposition with relatively moderate talent levels

    they have a smart, forward-thinking system based approach that suits them (and their recruiting situation) very well

  • off the top of my head, i'd put our "good evaluations" at:

    - melvin, dylan, ace, justice, brandon wilds, rory anderson, mike matulis, devin taylor, chaz sutton, (and im sure im missing a bunch)

    of course we have quite a few missed evaluations (LBs Whatley, Harris, Muldrow OL Broome, Harris DBs Royster, Mattox)

    obviously, every program will have its fair share of swings and misses

    but i'd be interested in hearing an neutral/objective analyst who follows this stuff weigh in on how good we really are at evaluating talent

    but this new little kick some yall are on about us being so much better than everyone else at identifying and developing talent is coming off a bit dabo-esque

    we aint the only ones who make due with fewer built-in recruiting advantages
