Best SC High School Player?

  • There is a thread on TOS, where I do not post, but it is interesting.
We watched film on Freddie Soloman, hoping to play them in 1970, did not work out, but he was like greased lightning. Seemed like he could run as fast sideways and he could forward, what a talent.

We went to the State championship game with Sumter and Spartanburg in WBB with a former Sumter football HOF player. He bragged all the way to the game about Sumter and Wally Richardson. My Golfing partner who was with us said, your are getting ready to get introduced to the best football player in SC, Stephen Davis. never heard of him before that night. Stephen scored the only touchdowns (3) that night and he ran over and by everyone on a very talented and well coached Sumter team. We wanted him bad at USC, but did not meet academic requirements. An Auburn Grad & golfing friend of mine told us, no problem, we will get him in with the Auburn family and he will do fine, and he did. Unbelievable speed for a 6' 2" 220 lb athlete. i think he won the 100 meter state championship that year.

Meat from Lexington had tremendous talent. I was not convinced at first, but saw him play in several games and he could juke when needed and outrun guys when needed.
He walked away from OW players and left Brian Staley in the dust (Clemson commit at the time with 4.3 speed, don't know if I believe it ? ).

Stephen Davis was the most freakish athlete period at 220lb. I was standing front row at the finish line at that state 100 meter meet where he smoked former world record holder Tim Montgomery whom he easily out weighed by at least 30 lbs, maybe more. To see someone that big run a 10.00 100 meter is crazy. He was National Player of the year in football and National Track Athlete of the Year (fastest 100 meter in the country that year in high school). Spartanburg steamed rolled everyone that year and he usually did not play in the second halhf of most of the games.

I saw Tracy play also, he was fantastic but Steve has my vote.

  • Steve couldnt take a hit in high school. He always had a good game stat wise, but when it got crunch time and he got popped he spent the rest of the game on the sidelines.

He senior year they steam rolled people until they played us(Northwestern). Steve is 0-3 against us.

  • I was at the Sumter-Spartanburg State Championship game, I too, came away very impressed with Steve Davis.

Did anyone seen Lawrence Mitchell play? He was a Clowney-like player from Conway. He got caught up in some politics his Senior year of high school and did not play, was Prop-48 his freshman year at USC, and then blew out his knee on the first play (the opening kick off , I think) of his soph. year. What a run of bad luck and a waste.

Marion's Shawn Graves, the best HS player I ever saw.
