Best SC High School Player?

  • Freddie Solomon or Ryan Bethea. Willie Varner, Joe Turbeville, Art Baker, Pinky Babb all said Fast Freddie was the best they had seen. Ryan had so much talent on that loaded RNE team, I don't think he ever understood how good he really was.

Two things and I could be wrong on both. First, I thought Davis actually favored Clemson. Second, I was under the impression he took the $$$$ and went to AU.

That was amazing in it's self. It took a lot of $$ to top the payouts Ford & Clemson were paying in the day!
They were paying better than anyone. SMU got the the Death Penalty, for much less.

Grew up with Ryan, good friends him, his sister and my cousin even dated for several years it was not that he didn't get how good he was it was that sports came easy for him and he played everything and excelled. The truth be told he got bored at times with football. I find it laughable that Quinshad Davis is even put in this coversation because if compared to Ryan there is none.

Pretty sure Harold Green played on the same Shrine Bowl team as Tony Rice and Ira Hillary.

Hillary finished Strom Thurmond in 1980. Rice finished at Woodruff in 1985. Green finished at Stratford in 1986.

Steve Davis didn't have many options. Auburn wasn't his only option but was one of his better options. He was prop 48. Auburn was one of the last major schools to accept prop 48 players without a quota or cap (prop 48 gave way to the partial qualifying rule of the late 90's early '00's).

Auburn also sweetened the deal by offering his best friend demond fields (TE) and some other cash incentives to seal the deal.

He did like Clemson over South Carolina but he wasn't going to be accepted to either of them.

The rules at the time allowed us to take 1 prop 48 every few years (2 years I believe). We had recently taken a prop 48 and AU had not. We weren't an option once it was clear he'd be prop 48, but probably would have gotten him otherwise. This was the talk on sports radio around Columbia at least.

  • You are correct on all counts.

Come on man. Nobody has even put Quinshad Davis in this discussion. One poster that tries too hard said his name sarcastically but that's it. Surely you knew he wasn't serious. Right?

How about guys like Tony Rice (Woodruff & Notre Dame), Ira Hillary (Strom Thurmond & USC), Chris Hope, Sheldon Brown, William Perry, Shaun Ellis, Albert Haynesworth, Courtney Brown, Joe Hamilton, Peter Bouleware, Richard Seymour, John Abraham....

The list could go on forever. Just go to the archives at FSU. They were good for stealing our best player just about every year.

I'm a little younger, but the BEST HS player I've ever seen in person was def Stephen Davis. However Demetrius Summers against Dorman as a sophomore in Willy-B was impressive too.

Haynesworth had 19 tackles his senior year. He made no effort. Team mate Jason Capers had a much more productive HS career. Massive talent, but hardly a great HS player.
