Best place in or around Columbia to take kids to the river

Done some kayaking on the Congaree and Saluda, and it is beautiful down there. However, I would really be hesitant to swim in it.

A friend of mine told me of a family she knows who were swimming at Santee a few weeks ago and the 8 year old nephew got one of those rare parasitic bacteria up his nose that got to his brain, caused a form of meningitis and he died last week. The rest of the family was being monitored. Obviously one of those rare things, but I'd be lying if I said I don't think about it whenever we swim in rivers/lakes. It seems we hear about more of that than in the past. Again, rare, but still kinda scary.

    Indeed. That's terrible.

    What a bunch of weirdos.

Isn't that like the pot calling the kettle black or is this too politically incorrect?

I'm partial, but we go to Lake Wateree all the time. Lots of creeks and areas off the main (what we call "The Big Water") channel to drop anchor and have fun without lots of boating traffic going by. Not sure how feasible this would be for you, but highly recommend it.

    +1

The folks live at the north end of Lake Wateree. Nice and quiet even on holiday weekends.

Thanks! I was wondering where the other Wateree proponents were on here. The way I'm seeing the other places described, Wateree would be pretty much heavenly to them in terms of what they're looking for.

Love Wateree, we go to the campground and spend the weekend on the lake. It is the true definition of middle of no where. If that is your thing, then you will love it... Trying to find a grocery store to grab a fee necessities... not going to happen.

We used to camp at Wateree State Park and would just try to remember to take everything we'd need for the week and pay a little extra for anything else needed at the store there or nearby convenience stores. Now that the camper is on a permanant site in Beaver Creek, it doesn't take very long from there to get to Camden's grocery stores. In my opinion, it's far enough away from towns to "get away" from everything, yet close enough at virtually all points for needs. It only takes us about 25 minutes to get there/home, so it's nice to be able to go pretty much whenever we like and not have to plan much in advance.

I can spend all day there and be home, grab a shower, and in my own bed in no time. We really enjoy it.

Yeah true if you are south then Camden isn't bad. We come from Rock Hill, so heading to Camden is way out of the way. Great falls is the closest civilization from that direction i believe.
