Big Spur Combine - What's your 40?

dude, 4.5 is flying. People talk like 4.6 is slow. truth is, the fastest guy on the field in most high school games runs a 4.6. You could have at least been a 200m star in track. back to the speed thing. Tim Tebow is fast, he ran a 4.7 I always was/still am fascinated by these really fast people, probably because I am not. It seems like such an advantage.

this is the truth, and byrnes was an elite program at the time and still is a great program, there s&c program is way better than 95% of high schools in the state. The fastest guy on our hs team ran around a 4.4 and there wasn't anybody else close to him, maybe one or two in the high 4.5's. And we won the 2a state my sr year and lost in it my jr. year.

High school: 5'9" 205 4.7 Now: 5'9" a little heavier a lot slower. Had a guy I played with in high school that was 6'2" 215 running 4.3 something. His brother was 6'5" 230 and ran 4.5 Fastest guys I played against were Troy Williamson and Ty whatshisname from Woodland.

Troy Williamson had ELITE speed. He was quick, and had the top end speed. He was Damiere Byrd fast. He ran track, and was an excellent SEC track guy. What was TW like in high school? Did he play running back? He was one of those guys like Victor Hampton, he just looks different running than everyone else; the acceleration and explosion with each stride is fascinating. Like I said, I have always been intrigued by speedsters because I am so slow.

troy was a wing back in the wing t offense, or whatever they called it. He was really really fast, they beat us in the state championship in 2001 a few years after I graduated. He somewhat single handily beat us.

  • So what is that, a running back, kind of like the pitch guy in option? Did he even catch many passes in high school? I can imagine he single handedly beat a lot of teams. Had to be the best guy on the field in every game. Did he play defense in high school?

  • I, now am 6'1" 225ish and run in the 4.7 range.

I ran around a 6.9/60 in HS, but was in the 16s for 3 miles. Was also about 5'10" 165.

Yes it was a similar offense to GT, don't think he played defense and didn't catch many passes either.

  • I was never timed in HS. I know I was quick on the basketball court, but pretty much everybody is fast on the basketball court.

    I was 6' 0" 135 lbs soaking wet in HS ( I know ridiculous skinny). I could run a 5:30 mile, but I bet I couldn't break 5.0 in the 40. I am positive I couldn't do it now, heck I'm doing good to run a 9:00 mile, I'm now 6' 0" 195 lbs, amazing what 20 years and 3 kids do to a body.

  • I never ran the 40 in HS because I never played football. I was a mid distance track and hurdle guy. I ran the 110 high hurdles, the 400 hurdles, the open 400 and was on the 4X4 team. I would guess that my 40 time was not that fast because I always got smoked in the open 100 and 200. I was pretty good in the 110's but that was simply because of solid form. The 400 I excelled in because I never ran out of energy, I stayed at top speed the entire time and passed people the last 50 meters. I was able to run the 400 in 50 seconds which was pretty solid. I made it to state in 96 in the 110's and on the 4X400 team. I clipped a hurdle that was knocked into my lain in the 400 hurdles and lost a second or two at upper state or I would have qualified there as well. When I left HS I held both school records in the hurdles as well as one as a member of the 4x400 record team. The 110 record still stands. I too could move pretty good for a 6-2 scrawney white kid.

Small side note... I ran in a heat against Terrance Trammel in the 110's as a junior at an event in Atlanta when he ran for SW Dekalb and got completely destroyed. Closest I have ever come to facing off against a real star.

  • My agent advised me not to run. He said even in my highscool days, it was just too much of an embarassment. I think his actual quote was, "Son, dumb, slow and stupid is no way to go through life."

  • My (not so)fondest memory of Troy was when he took a reverse against us, had him trapped. He reversed field and hit the sidelines. He ran over our free safety on the sideline and ran for maybe a 60-70 yard touchdown. Hated Silver Bluff!

4.9 as a defensive end. 5.2 as a defensive back. The moniker "defensive back 0f the 1980's" didn't last long.Actually, I was the man until the pads came on, then it was back to life, back to reality. I could cover you like glue. Glue I say! If it weren't for running plays, I could have been in the league.

That's good perspective - your thought on Shaw? That TD run against the Citadel - he appeared to be running track...he's got to be around a 4.6 or 7 guy don't you think?
