Biggest difference between USC and Clemson fans

  • brownng said...

I think thats a very good point. They go to school at Clemson and then leave. Thy never do real life there. So it always remains a romanticized nostalgic place in their minds.

Makes sense. I suppose it's probably similar when you talk about most schools in urban areas vs rural areas.

I get the downvotes. Go ahead, though my point was not trashing Columbia by any means, just the perception of the fan bases when
comparing their college towns/cities. In fact I live and love it in Columbia.

  • Despite the torrent of downvotes, the OP is correct that Clemson people seem to have more pride in their school.
I think a lot of that stems from Clemson's location in a small, isolated college town and its history as a former all-male military school.
But maybe Carolina fans and alums are starting to get some of that same pride, as a result of our current athletic success, as well as the improvements to the campus and the athletic facilities.

  • If Clemson is so GREAT then why is Columbia flooded with Clemson students during special weekends such as St Patrick's Day .etc! Let them stay in their boring little cow town!

It really hit me yesterday reading TOS MB.

Clemson fans absolutely *love* Clemson. They love the place. They think it's a truly special place. I can't tell you how many times I've read their fans on message boards describing it as special/unique/beautiful etc... (Whether you think so or not isn't of signifigance). They are pretty much unified in that thought. I don't see USC fans loving Columbia/campus/town as much as Clemson fans love Clemson. What would it take for you to love Columbia a little bit more?

Not really equal, columbia is a city, clempson is a small town. Do they love Anderson as well? I love our campus, hard to beat in a city setting. Have been told by others the same that did not go to either one.

  • Clemson followers are not fans - they are a cult - half of them didn’t go to school there and hide their racism behind the urban versus rural argument. I am amazed at how many African-American athlete’s go there - when
there is virtually a non-existent AA community in Clemson and in the student body outside of athletes. The stars get the first class hero worship - but I wonder how many of the “non-stars” end up getting hired by the “good Clemson” fans post graduation.

  • Clemson is a cult.

After I posted just the one sentence above, I saw that Captiva had the same thought. They are truly brainwashed up there. At a recent graduation party for my daughter, I met 2 Clemson students who found out I was a Carolina fan and their cute little smart ass remark was, "Clemson is better." To which I asked, academically or athletically? The reply was "Both" to which I busted out laughing. I said that academically we could debate at a later time but if you seriously believe that athletically you are better why don't you name any sport you have actually beat USC in the last 2 years. Crickets,

Anyway, the two guys began talking about how wonderful Dabo is. I swear they are brainwashed there. It's a cult. Dabo is perfect for their mentality.

  • Sad but true. OP didn't say we agree that Clemson is awesome at everything but that all Clemson fans believe it. We have too many fans that bicker over garnet or black ... They all wear orange. We all need to be on the same page as Gamecocks and who gives a crap what those idiot inbred redneck trash hillbillies do! Robert Nkscaredofbigboyfootbsll won't change the fact we make it 4 in a row in November.

  • Maybe the op is right, Columbia has gone down in the dumps since that tater became the governor.

  • Its common with all AG/Miltitary schools. I didn't go to USC so I see it from afar. What percentage of Clemson grads wear their class rings vs Carolina grads? Say what you want about tools wearing rings, but its a decent indicator of "pride." You can't go anywhere in the country without seeing some jackass wearing a tiger paw. All of us have friends who grew up Carolina fans but went to Clemson and now they all get this look on their face when talking about the two schools like "you just wouldn't understand."

But its the same w TAMU vs Texas. They're all gay over College Station and "yell practice" and all of that while everyone in Austin is saying "really?". And then you visit College Station on business when school is out and you think you are in a far corner of the world. When's the last time you heard someone say "there's just something special about Tuscaloosa." Auburn grads would convince you Auburn/Opelika is the center of the universe. OK State/Oklahoma, Okie State people act the same way about Stillwater.

A decent percentage of Carolina grads from outside the state look back on USC as the place where they got their degree. The same out of state grads at Clemson look at Clemson as the place where they became who they are. Its different- when you got to a school of 15-20,000 but you see the same people over and over as if its a high school because everything is so compact. From a recruiting standpoint, I think thats what most of us miss. Many of these athletes come from places where they have no family, no real steady place to hang their hat on. I think those are the kids that are susceptible to the Clemson "pitch."

very good point - they are steeped in their own nostalgia

Columbia is a city with "Home Atmosphere" People graduate and many remain. The upstate school is merely a check mark on the bucket list of life ... go to college ... move on - thanks for the memories.

For what it's worth - the Mars candy company compiled their 2012 Manliest Cities in America list. Columbia was 2nd behind Oklahoma City ... clemson, not on the list.

Parenthetically - they don't appear to be on any lists of top U.S. animal husbandry studies, veterinarian studies, horticultural programs, or farming schools - besides Ben Tillman what ARE they known for?

They don't know any better. You can take the tater out of cowtown, but you can't take the cowtown out of a tater.

  • First of all, that nonsense about there being something special about Clemson, or being unified is ridiculous. They turn on each other in a skinny minute and are currently in the process of devouring each other.

Second, if you don't see Carolina as more than a football team, you either did not go to school there or you weren't paying much attention while you were there.

I love Carolina just as much as any taterfan ever could love Clemson and I wouldn't trade anything about it for the ----hole in Pickens. Not the buildings, not the campus, social environment, and sure as hell not the people.

That's your opinion as an outsider but I completely disagree with you. Most of my fellow USC alumni, whether they be in state or out of state, have a tremendous amount of pride in their university. It defines them after they leave and they wouldn't trade their college experience for any in the country.
