Bruce Ellington

  • May have missed this but is Martin definitely going to allow Ellington to come out for the team after football season?

Yes. He said it's up to Bruce. Whatever he wants to do.

Thanks John. The "dedicated to basketball 365" comment had me wondering about Bruce.

  • Nothing to lose really. Bruce is a walk on, and is a solid to good guard. He will definitely contribute.

  • I think u are right Joe. Ellington has basketball talent and will not be counted on this season as he has been in the past. So he will be an asset late in season. I am just glad Martin didn't sit around waiting on him to show up after football season like Horn did. That was to much to ask of Ellington and to much pressure. I think Ellington will have time to get into basketball shape before he sees meaningful playing time. Without the pressure of being the guy, Ellington will enjoy his basketball experience more and will help this team.

Bruce will be the best player on the team the minute he joins it.

I don't know who it might be. But if our best player is a guy who has been playing football while the rest of the basketball team has been practicing and playing basketball, we will have a bad team next year.

I don't see anyone on next year's team that even comes close to Bruce.

Then Frank Martin's first USC team will be a disappointment.

You can't make chicken salad out of chicken $#*@. Next year will be rough, as well as the following, but year three will be much improved imo.

Well, I guess that settles that then.

    Frank disagrees, though, fwiw.

Well, when half of your anticipated roster transfers out, and your nucleus of players is gone you shouldn't expect big things. Martin will get it done, but it certainly won't be an overnight transformation.

And fwiw, I bet Frank doesn't expect to win 20 games next year...

  • I think Bruce will have alot of adjustments to make. I think he could become a good player....but I doubt he will be asked...or allowed to be freelancing like he did with Horn. If Bruce buys in....it will benefit him because he ain't ever going to be an Iverson...but he could be a good Stoudemire.

No and wasn't last year, IMO. BE is a talented athlete and at time can take over a BB game, but at others he is reckless and his BB iq gets in the way. NOt having to be the man, will help make him a better player.

Bruce is a very bright guy with a great 'bball IQ', most of that recklessness came because Horn's offense consisted of telling Bruce to score every time down during stretches of the game. He can only operate within the system he is placed in.

That goes for all these players. When you have no game plan or system in which to operate, and you are playing against teams who do, you are going to look bad. There is no telling how good these kids are, because we have never seen them put in a situation where they could succeed.

Sorry, but BE pushes the ball recklessly, gets out of position defensively, and simply feeds the post poorly, with bad angles and poor feel for timing. There were hundreds of times our bigs had good position and BE was either to slow, made a poor feed or simply didn't make the feed for whatever reason. Intelligence and BB IQ don't always equate.

Ummm Horn's gone, so I guess we should blame him for everything, does that include the weather?

  • Did some of you miss the 4 new recruits that committed recently within a 24 hour period? Yeah, sure, they will be freshmen and will make freshmen mistakes but they have talent and the upside is good. Next year will be a huge question going into the season as we have no idea how fast the freshmen will catch on. We might only win 14 games, but we might win over 20. I'd like to see some you naysayers go join a clemson board and help them trash us on their site. You're drinking the urrange kool-aide, you might as well go over there.

Pretty honest post and I agree for the most part. Tread lightly though... It seems like there is a new leader of the Sunshine Pumpers Alliance and the constituency is starting to grow. violin BE is a great athlete but not a true Point Guard.. he could have a significant role on the team. I agree with being a monster off the bench (great sixth man). IMO there were a hell of a lot more problems than just BE's play.
