Byrd's confidence beginning to soar

After a disappointing season on the football field, Damiere Byrd's confidence is beginning to soar on the track, which he believes will carry back to the gridiron.

  • IMO and Just by watching him play I think he has the most natural ability out out of any of our receivers. looks bigger than i thought, runs very tough, and is very very fast.

need to find simpler ways to get him involved in the passing game instead of just sending him deep. very difficult play to connect on and confidence deflating if the pass is dropped. Just because a guy is a burner doesn't mean sending him deep and end arounds is the only way to get him involved. I hope that was just because he was unfamiliar with the system because of missed reps in practice and games.

It would be HUGE for us if he and ellington stepped up this year.

  • Will Bryd try out for the US Olympic team this fall. Looks like that would interfere with football.

  • It seems like it would be a lot simpler than it is. He has to know the plays, and they have to be confident he will run the correct route, and block if the ball goes to someone else. If they don't think he is doing those things, someone else will get the pt. They cannot make special arrangements for someone just because they are fast. If someone else is doing all the things better, then why take snaps away from them?

  • Excellent article! I pay for this stuff and not the speculative bickering. This WR corp is shaping up to be vintage HBC...

  • My old high school teammate worked with Damiere at his 7 on 7 camp and had nothing but glowing things to say about him. He also said do not be fooled by last years hands and that DB always showed great hands throughout high school out of the backfield and in all the camps catching the ball. I am looking forward to seeing him next season after a year in the weight room, track and spring ball. He will add a dimension to our offense that we haven't seen in a long time.

  • That is why late season bowl practices are so important. Damiere could have a breakout season starting game one.

  • I agree he got screwed by the NCAA.

If he would have caught that deep pass and went in for a TD I think things could have been different for him. You can waste your time thinking about the past but it gets in the way of the future. I am glad to hear he's getting confidence and is ready to get started for next year.

I hope he kicks some @$$ at the SEC championship.

  • Needs Improvement: Must add strength and muscle mass in order to combat bigger, physical corners. Byrd could also improve his releases off the line of scrimmage by making better use of his hands and arms.

That is the book on him. He isn't that big nor that strong and this isn't the ACC. The SEC is the closest thing to the NFL. DB's thru out this league are good, big and strong. Honest observation: this kid is two years away. It will take him that long to develop an SEC receivers body. He should have red-shirted but everyone bought into the hype........Good future but it's going to take time. Thankfully we have plenty of excellent young receivers that spent this season getting ready for next season.

I'm not sure I agree with you. Demps & Rainey were two of the smallest guys I've ever seen on a football field and look at the production they had within Florida's offense. Heck they were UF's offense.

    Actually, the stats prove that

    1) Rainey was red-shirted and played very little in his RS-Freshman season, it was not until his 3rd season in the program that he started to show signs of being a very good player
    2) While Demps did play his freshman and Soph seasons, both his Jr and Sr seasons were cut short by
many injuries related to the beating he took due to his overall size. In fact his Jr and Sr numbers were lower than either Fr or Soph

The truth is Aces Sanders has had more of an impact in his first 2 seasons than either of those guys. I am not saying DB isn't going to be a good player someday at USC, just saying I think it will take another year in the program before you can expect what most on this board want. Lets also not forget that Demps had to drop track and take football seriously before he became the player he was. Based on what his position coach thinks, DB feels his future pay day will be track so there is a question if he will ever seriously committ to being the best football player he can be.

I for one, would not be surprised to see DB red-shirted after the first 3-4 games.

NFL evaluator: "For us, I'd line up (Florida RB) Jeff Demps in the slot. I think that's where he'll be at his best. He has good hands. He can help in the return game. I'd worry about him holding up in the backfield. If you want him to stay healthy, I think you have to protect him. He's along the same lines of Dexter McCluster.

    10/15/2011 (Injury Note):

Florida RB Jeff Demps sprained his left ankle against Alabama on Oct. 1. He tried to go against LSU, but carried just twice before exiting and was unable to play against Auburn.

    09/10/2011 (Injury Note):

Florida RB Jeff Demps hurt his shoulder against UAB and did not play in the second half.

    Based on what?

He's not working out and it doesn't look like he is going to be ready or available for the entire Spring practice period.

"Byrd, who hasn’t done any workouts with the team but has gone to watch film,"

"Spring practice is still a couple of weeks away and he’s still focused on track"

gone are the days when guys could just show up and play without putting in the time required. As so many like to say this is the "New Carolina". There are currently 9 receivers working everyday to get better, DB isn't one of them. Sorry I put my faith in the guys that are working to become the best football players they can be. He's a budding track star so I agree, next season should be his break out season.....in track
