Carlton Geathers suffers right knee injury

  • MBB: Geathers Suffers Knee Injury Rising redshirt-sophomore injures knee in summer league game.

COLUMBIA, S.C. - South Carolina men's basketball redshirt-sophomore forward Carlton Geathers has sustained a right knee cap fracture, which will require surgery, and is expected to be out of practice and game action for a minimum of six months, first-year head coach Frank Martin announced on Monday. Geathers suffered the injury in a summer pro-am league game in Columbia on Thursday, July 19.

Geathers saw action in 28 contests with one start during his redshirt-freshman campaign of 2011-12. The Georgetown, S.C., native averaged 1.0 point, 1.5 rebounds and 0.6 blocks in 7.8 minutes per contest.

  • Boo, i heard he was playing well in the SCPro-Am.

    Fomerly known as Garnet&BlackAttack.

  • Wow, that hurts.

I guess Chat and, well Chat, along with Chat are going to have to be the center at the beginning of the year.

Can Slawson be a legit center, or will we go small for much of the time now? How tall is RJ?

Slawson is a SF all the way. No where big enough to play center.

  • Could have done without that.

  • Slawson is a PF height at 6'8 but his skills are better suited for SF. I would look at our line up as more of a lineup that's going to consist of 2 forwards and 3 guards and sometimes a center.

    We're talkin:

    PG: Ellington/Smith/Philips
    SG: Williams/Leonard/Richardson/Hall
    SF: Jackson/Leonard/Richardson/Hall
    PF: Slawson/Kacinas/Carrera
    C: L-Chat

This is a major blow to the team, just in the fact that we are already thin at bodies at the F/C positions.

Not to mention our PF's are pretty undersized:

    Slawson: 6'8" 196
Kacinas: 6'8" 200 (both Slawson and Kacinas are more SF than PF in my opinion)
    Carrera: 6'6' 205

We are in BIG trouble if we can't get Carrera, Philips and Hall in.

  • I did see Chat play yesterday in the Summer League. He is not a project. He is the typically euro type mechanical big man on offense. His defense lags somewhat. He is going to struggle against smaller more athletic bigs but he can bang inside very well. You can tell he has been working with Frank on defensive positioning in the shell drill (Lakeem showed that too). Chat is a true 5, I don't see him playing the 4 any at all. Looks like in light of the Geathers injury, the 4 wouldn't be an option anyway.

I guess when Chat goes out, we will have a small lineup out there. Losing Dickerson was a bigger loss than we thought.
